On May 20, in protest of the lack of Wall Street prosecutions, The Home Defenders League, Occupy our Homes and several others organized an action to open dialogue with the Department of Justice regarding mortgage fraud.

Four to five hundred people marched on the Department of Justice in Washington DC. It was about 2:30 p.m. We were stopping traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue. Shouts of, “The banks got bailed out, we got sold out!” filled the air as the protesters marched toward their destination. Buses of people had come in from surrounding cities and states to take part in the march.

Death in Custody
LONG BEACH — A man died in the custody of the Long Beach Police Department May 25.
The LBPD arrested the man after private security detained him at an industrial property on the 6200 block of Paramount Avenue.
The man allegedly broke into the property and was going into employee vehicles.
Police say that a security guard was called and after arriving, the suspect attempted to take the security guards vehicle from him. A struggle ensued and the suspect fled on foot with the security guard following him. During the incident, the security guard company called the Long Beach Police and requested assistance.

Satellite Orchestra Beaming the Funk to You

Satellite Orchestra’s live show keeps the music flowing. Lee likens it to a DJ continuously spinning records in a club. It’s more than a groove though. Many diverse effects are incorporated from instrumental horns to galactic reverberations and are orchestrated together in such a way that it suspends your state of mind and opens it up to new possibilities. I got to see this up close at Café Cordiale in Sherman Oaks this past April.

This Los Angeles based electro-jazz funk trio seamlessly blend funk and cool jazz vibes that is reminiscent of acid jazz but funkier. Electric keyboardist, Rodney Lee, is the leader of the band with drummer Eric Valentine and Andre Barry on electric bass. The band performs numbers composed mostly by Lee. He explained to the audience that he also creates music “on the fly,” live from his laptop as they perform. They do covers as well, adding their own twist of jazz, funk and improvisation. If that’s not enough attention to detail, Lee also sings backup on some of the numbers.

Low Turnout Election Gives Garcetti the Win and Nuch the Boot

Los Angeles Election Results
LOS ANGELES — The unofficial election results for the City of Los Angeles general elections now are available.

Mayor elect-Eric Garcetti beat Controller Wendy Greuel by 28,890 votes in the May 21 election, amid an 11.68 percent voter turnout. In District 15, which includes much of the Harbor Area, voter turnout was 9.7 percent. There, Garcetti lead by 1,351 votes.

The numbers were much different in the race for city attorney, where incumbent City Attorney Carmen Trutanich lost by a landslide of 55,487 votes, against Mike Feuer, despite the support of District 15, where he led against Feuer 5,294 to 4,539 votes.

The council voted 11-2 to approve the controversial Southern California International Gateway off-dock railyard project, less than two weeks before a new mayor will be elected. Twelve years ago, in its waning weeks, the Richard Riordan administration rushed through approval of the China Shipping terminal project without benefit of an environmental impact report.

The lawsuit that followed eventually transformed the port in many ways, but not enough, it appears, as the Harbor Commission’s closed session agenda the week before the council vote included seven potential Southern California International Gateway-based lawsuits from appellants who were heard—and ignored—by the Los Angeles City Council.

The collection includes emblematic works by José Luis Cuevas, Julio Galán, Nelson Garrido and Francisco Toledo, among others.
The titleThe Voyeurreferences one of the works in the exhibition by Jorge Alzaga, while also alluding to the French term meaning “one who looks,” and the studies by feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey on the representations of women—not restricted to cinema but other art forms—sexual fantasies and objectification from a male point of view.
