Landslide Crack Discovered

San Pedro — A 3 feet in diameter crack was found at the White Point landslide near a home, Nov. 4. The discovery led to a work stoppage.

The Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council Landslide Committee discussed the issue that evening and decided to contact the Bureau of Engineering to discuss resident safety.

On Nov. 5, Councilman Joe Buscaino issued a statement on hiswebsitesupporting the recommendation from the White Point Landslide Advisory Committee to restore the roadway with a retaining wall to maximize the safety and stability of the area.

On Nov. 13, the committee will be requesting that a motion be added to the Nov. 18 general meeting to recommend the closure of that section of Paseo del Mar to address traffic and public safety concerns.

A few years ago there was this great party in one of the communal, hippie-ish houses here in Long Beach. A rotation of DJs held it down behind a pair of turntables in the dining room, while an appreciative press of bodies churned in time, free and easy, 21st-century-hippie style.

The house was north of 7th Street, a little bit in the ‘hood. (In a matter of seconds Long Beach goes from “definitely not the ‘hood” to “um….”) Sometime around midnight numerous newcomers arrived, young men apparently not acquainted with any of the ten residents. They made their way to the dining room-cum-dance floor and appreciatively took in the vibrant scene. They were in no way obtrusive, so no-one paid them any mind. We just kept dancing.

Renewable Hope Thanksgiving Food Project 2013

The ROCK Christian Fellowship will provide free boxes of food to the public, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nov. 23, in Long Beach.

This will be the fifth year of free food distribution and everyone is welcome.
It is The ROCK’s hope to provide 500 boxes of food to families in need. Each box has enough food to supplement the needs of a family with four to six people.

Long Beach City Council Meeting

Long Beach City Council Meeting

The Long Beach City Council will consider, at 5 p.m. Nov. 12, directing Chief of Police Jim McDonnell to present a plan would provide a valid cost to establish a special sex crime unit.

The city council also is scheduled to vote on an agreement for baggage handling systems at the Long BeachAirport. The city would enter into a 2-year agreement for an amount not to exceed $1,1114,911 with John Bean Technologies, to perform maintenance and improvement of the systems with two optional 1-year renewals for not to exceed $300,000 per year at the city manager’s discretion.

In addition, the council will consider a triennial code adoption amending an ordinance related to the Long Beach Building Standards Code.

Women’s Health Center Rededicated

Long Beach — The newly expanded and modernized Sr. Mary Sabina Sullivan Women’s Health Center and the Vincent Esposito Imaging Center at St. Mary Medical Center will be re-dedicated on Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

One of the first centers to offer the community digital mammography, the Women’s Health Center recently relocated to the first floor of the 1045 Atlantic Ave. Professional Building, Ste. 105.

As the need for mammography screenings and diagnostics has increased, the Women’s Health Center has grown. St. Mary Medical Center Foundation stepped in to support the purchase of a second digital mammography unit and funded the relocation of the center so as to provide more efficient services.

Fullerton — On Nov. 4, a former Disneyland employee was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and stay at least 100 yards away from the theme park, after admitting guilt to setting off two dry ice bombs.

Christian Isaiah Barnes, 23, plead guilty to misdemeanor possession of a destructive device as part of a plea bargain. The Orange County Superior Court sentenced Barnes, a Long Beach resident, to the 36 days in jail he has served and three years of informal probation.

Barnes originally was charged with felony possession of a destructive device in a public place, a crime that could have carried up to six years in prison.

Fights Ends in Deadly Stabbing

Long Beach Police Department officers found 51-year-old Anthony Ramirez laying on the street, at about 8:15 p.m. Nov. 3, on the 1900 block of Locust Avenue, while responding to a call about a fight, officials said.

Ramirez was apparently stabbed. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics took Ramirez to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The motive of the stabbing is unknown. Investigators believe Ramirez was involved in a physical fight with a group of people before the stabbing.

No suspect information is available. The incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

Leadership Changes at Cultural Affairs, Disability Departments

Los Angeles – On Nov. 4, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that Department of Cultural Affairs General Manager and Executive Director Olga Garay-English is stepping down effective Jan. 4, 2014.

She will consult as special advisor to the Creative Economy to Otis College of Art and Design President Samuel Hoi and will also advise City Councilman Tom LaBonge and the Los Angeles Sister Cities Program on local and international cultural programs.

Assistant General Manager Matthew Rudnick will serve as interim general manager at the Department of Cultural Affairs until a permanent general manager is appointed.
