A focus on diabetes awareness, prevention and risk management is coming to Los Angeles County as the American Diabetes Association® officially kicks off its Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes event campaign.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who successfully introduced a motion that proclaimed September as the county’s designated month to support the American Diabetes Association’s hallmark event, has led efforts to rally L.A. County resources in support of diabetes fundraising and advocacy efforts.
As noted in the motion, nearly 50% of Los Angeles County employees and their families are living with diabetes or prediabetes – and that number is expected to rise. The L.A. County Department of Public Health’s website notes that in Los Angeles County, one out of 10 adults has type 2 diabetes.
The Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes happens Sept. 30. There is no registration fee, and individuals can also register as a virtual participant. Youth 17 years old or younger who raise $30 or more will receive recognition gifts at varying levels.
