Councilmember Tim McOsker made the following announcement at the end of the May 12 Los Angeles City Council meeting on the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the San Pedro Maritime Strike or the Liberty Hill strike.

McOsker announced, in San Pedro, on May 14 at 6 p.m., an event “commemorating a great event that happened 100 years ago.

“The demonstration was the biggest challenge to the dominance of the open shop culture in Los Angeles among working men and women, led by the IWW or the Wobblies. Author and activist Upton Sinclair rose to speak from the US constitution and within moments he was arrested.

“… In LA 100 years ago, a friend of labor was viewed as a dangerous threat, no matter what words were spoken.”
