PCH Widening to Resume Near Second Street
Work will continue next week on a project to alleviate congestion at the intersection of southbound Pacific Coast Highway at Second Street. The project will add a second left turn lane and provide room for right turns onto Second Street without blocking through-traffic, and add sidewalk along Pacific Coast Highway. Traffic control will be in place to provide safety for motorists and workers. Lane closures will be required to perform work for approximately two weeks, with an estimated start date of May 21. Therefore, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes, when possible.
Earlier work on the project included upgrading fire suppression systems for neighboring business; relocating underground utilities to accommodate a new storm drain system; and upgrading lighting and installing new landscaping.

Harbor Community Adult School Celebrates 100 Years
Harbor Community Adult School will be celebrating 100 years of adult education in San Pedro at its upcoming graduation ceremony on June 13, 2012 at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro.
The event will honor high school graduates, 8th grade diploma recipients and ESL completers. Students from the Family Literacy Program also will be recognized. The event will be a bittersweet occasion because of the state of the Los Angeles
Unified School District budget. The district is looking to possibly close the entire Division of Adult and Career Education, or at least drastically reduce the number of adult schools from 30 to 10.
During the past 10 years, Harbor Community Adult School has produced 900 high school graduates. It has also served an additional 21,065 students in Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, Citizenship, Career Technical Education, Programs for Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities classes. High school students in the Harbor Area also have taken advantage of Harbor Community Adult School’s classes in order to complete their graduation requirements for their high school diploma. This past year’s enrollment was 8,347students. In September 2012 enrollment could be
zero.

SP Red Car Out of Service
The Port of Los Angeles Waterfront Red Car Line will temporarily stop service from May 25 through June 28 — with the exception of Memorial Day Weekend — due to construction of the new Downtown Watercut Project adjacent to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.
The Downtown Harbor project will create a new harbor inlet for vessels to dock and approximately 700 linear feet of promenade. Surrounding the inlet will be a modern town square, featuring landscaping, lighting and expansive promenades, expected to be completed in 2014.
The trolley will make additional stops while red car is non-operational. The Red Car will reopen with free rides on Memorial Day weekend from May 25 through 28. While the Red Cars are non-operational, the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District’s Red Trolley will make stops along the Red Car route. The PBID Red Car Trolley runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. and the first Thursday of every month from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Normal Red Car hours of operation are from noon to 9:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday, which resumes on Friday, June, 29, for the Port’s annual “Cars & Stripes Forever!” event.
