The Tragedy of Macbeth at Studio Theatre–An experiment that deserves repeating

[portfolio_slideshow]

By John Farrell, Theatre Critic

Like his play,Hamlet, Shakespeare’s TheTragedy of Macbethis so filled with memorable lines, memorable speeches, that seeing it onstage is a little bit of an English quiz. The Witches? Who can forget “Double, double, toil and trouble”? How about Lady Macbeth’s unforgettable hand-washing. Or Birnam Wood? Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s unforgettable stories, a bloody tragedy that might make John Webster envious and with poetry and psychological insight into ambition-driven lives that Webster never managed.

A Crisis of Ethics

By Sherry Hernandez, Member of Occupy San Pedro

On July 17, a group from Occupy Fight Foreclosures in Los Angeles met to attend the meeting of the County Board of Supervisors in hopes of addressing our hopes of getting a moratorium on foreclosures until the Homeowners Bill of Rights goes into effect.

Within the group were less than a handful of home buyers who wanted their grievances heard.

POLA Announces Retail Development Opportunity

San Pedro — The Port of Los Angeles and Councilman Joe Buscaino announced a 30-acre retail development opportunity, July 26, at Ports O’Call Village in San Pedro.

The announcement for a request of qualifications initiates a search for commercial real estate developers to redevelop the San Pedro waterfront property, known as Ports O’Call Village. POLA plans to select a master developer to carry out a comprehensive redevelopment of the property and enter into a long-term lease.

The area is near recent enhancements such as the USS Iowa Battleship and marketplace, Crafted.

Trouble in Fantasy Land–When the dream machine collides with reality

Disneyland-Vacation
By James Preston Allen, Publisher

There is trouble brewing just down the street from the Magic Kingdom, “the happiest place on earth” there is trouble brewing at Anaheim City Hall.

The uproar over the police shootings of two Latinos under questionable circumstances. According to the authorities, there have been six officer-involved shootings in the past year, compared to four this past year. The city council voted to ask for a federal civil rights investigation, but outside the chambers, an angry and indignant crowd gathered, unable to enter the already crowded council room–the mood turned ugly. Anaheim police in riot gear pushed the protesters back and the protesters, in turn, grew defiant. Police swung batons and fired rubber bullets. The crowd threw rocks and bottles back. No one is sure how it started.

More than twenty remarkable musicians and vocalists performed in tribute to Gil Scott-Heron last Friday on July 20. But there were two artist’s that were closest to these fans heart’s: Gil’s daughter and spoken word artist Gia Scott-Heron and his long- time collaborator Brian Jackson, on keys, piano and flute.

With the audience and the stage separated by a large calming pool of water, DJ Jeremy Sole from behind his turntables set the supremely loving tone of the evening, performing a narrative

Fight Over Proposed Dog Park Gets Nasty As Allegations of Political Quid Pro Quo Are Thrown

By Zamná Ávila, Assistant Editor

Long Beach District 4 Councilman Patrick O’Donnell was recently forced to defend the allocation of $65,000 towards the building of a potential dog park at El Dorado Park. Some opponents are calling his support for the dog park a form of payback for the Friends of El Dorado Dog Park endorsement he received during his re-election campaign for a third term in office. He denies those allegations.

According to city records, O’Donnell set aside $31,300 from the $500,000 in uplands oil funds allocated to the district and $33,700 from the district infrastructure budget, totalling $65,000.

Cellaring is Not Just for Wine

By Michael Koger, Craft Beer Columnist

The rule of thumb for beer is it’s best when it’s fresh.

This holds especially true for beers like Pale Ales and India Pale Ales, whose bitter hop flavors fade within time. However, there are some beers that can withstand the test of time and, in some cases, improve. A new trend has arisen in beer: advocacy of “cellaring” beers. Much like people do with wine, certain beer styles can be set aside for some years and actually develop into more complex beers. So how do you know which styles can be cellared?

In Theatres Now: The Dark Knight Rises

Directed: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Morgan Freeman

On Friday night, I anxiously peered through the movie theatre dim for a gun totting psychopath. I scanned the exits, though doubtless, I would’ve been powerless to protect myself or anyone around me from harm. Call it irrational paranoia or rational cautiousness, I feared that a copy cat or a conspirator in league with James Eagan Holmes would visit death upon the audience. We see movies to temporarily escape the realities of our lives yet, while we share the director’s vision, we are terribly vulnerable to acts of violent lunacy. As the trailers rolled by, I wondered how this hadn’t happened before and how long before it will happen again.
