There’s still time to complete health insurance applications by the “new” April 15 deadline. If you’ve had trouble with your application, certified enrollment counselors and certified insurance brokers will provide enrollment support and answer final questions through one-on-one assistance.

Mexican Mobile Consulate
The Mexican Mobile Consulate will be available at 11 a.m. April 12 at the McBride Teen Center in Long Beach.
People interested can attend for free to obtain important documents such as passports and consular identification cards.

The following documents must be brought with you in order to process services: original birth certificate, an effective official identification with the name on the identification the same as it appears on the birth certificate, proof of address in Los Angeles County, and two passport photos with a white background.

Communities Rally To Address Exide and Chronic Polluters
LOS ANGELES —On April 14, community members and elected officials from across Los Angeles and Riverside will gather in front of Exide Technologies (battery recycling plant) to demand statewide action to address the toxic levels of lead and arsenic that now affect the surrounding South East Los Angeles neighborhoods.
Community members will highlight the failures of current clean-up plans and the impacts of the facility, connect the struggle to the bigger need for statewide reform of the state’s environmental regulatory agencies and announce legislation that will steps towards changing the broken status quo that has allowed chronic polluters like Exide to continue for decades. The legislation include bills such as Sen. Ricardo Lara’s SB 712 and others.
Exide Technologies has repeatedly been found to emit high levels of arsenic and lead, including recent tests in homes. In addition, the Department of Toxic Substance Control, the agency in charge of regulating facilities who generate toxic materials, has also come under statewide scrutiny for their lack of strong environmental enforcement and accountability. Community members have been pushing statewide regulators and local elected officials to author legislation that will address the underlying conditions that have allowed facilities like Exide to chronically violate.

Grants Offered for Truck Replacement
As many as 15 $25,000 grants will be awarded to replace trucks servicing the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles thanks to a new program from Caltrans and the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority.
The grants, to be distributed under Caltrans and ACTA’s Heim Bridge Replacement Mitigation Truck Program, are part of an effort to improve air quality.
Eligible vehicles must be registered and operating, on-road, Class 8, heavy-duty, California Air Resources Board-exempt trucks servicing the ports.
The online application opens April 15.
A non-mandatory workshop will take place at 5 p.m. April 16, at Banning’s Landing to provide information and answer questions regarding the application process.

Long Beach City Council Meeting
The Long Beach City Council is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. April 15, at Long Beach City Hall.
Council members will consider authorizing the city manager to proceed with the design and bidding phase for the proposed Belmont Plaza Pool Demolition Project.
The city council also will consider a recommendation to ask the city attorney to draft a resolution that would encourage telecommunications companies to upgrade their wired and wireless networks in a way that limits impacts and benefits the community.

San Pedro Mural and Street Art Campaign
A community meeting and panel discussion to explore potential murals in San Pedro is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 17 at the Grand Annex.
The discussion also would explore how best to initiate and fund local projects. The meeting is planned as the first in a series of gatherings.
Street art can be controversial. Case in point: the mysterious black-and-white catsthat sprang up on walls and buildings in San Pedro’s commercial districts last year.
But it’s also viewed as a way to lend a distinctive sense of place to a community.

The Governing Board of the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council consists of 17 members. All Board members are “at large” members (there are no special qualifications for specific seats on the Board). Board members must be 18 years old or older on the day of the selection (18 May 2013), and must be a stakeholder in the Coastal San Pedro neighborhood.“A stakeholder is defined as any individual who lives, works, or owns property in the Neighborhood Council area. In addition, stakeholder status is conferred on those who declare a stake in the neighborhood and affirm the factual basis for it.”[CSPNC Bylaws].
The term of Board Members is for one year commencing July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year.NOTE:there is a pending amendment to the Bylaws of CSPNC which would initiate two-year staggered terms for Board members. If that change to the Bylaws comes into effect prior to the selection process, some election winners will begin two year terms upon taking their seats. The results of that amendment process will be known prior to the selection on10 May.

Pitch Lab is a great opportunity for WE Labs members and guests to share their ideas, get perspective, and form alliances with other inspiring minds.
Each visionary is given 2-3 minutes to give their pitch/idea/story. You are allowed to present a PowerPoint for the full time with your live presentation and/or show a video that is 60 seconds or less.
There will be 7-8 minutes of discussion with attendees after pitch.
Total time given is 10 minutes to each pitch so time must be watched.
Idea is for there to be 10 pitches allowed per event.
After all pitches are given attendees can approach the visionary and make suggestions, connections and initiate collaborations.

Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Mobile Help Desk comes to San Pedro’s Farmers Market, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 25, on 6th Street between Pacific Avenue and Mesa Street.
The Mobile Help Desk is part of the Mayor’s efforts to make City Hall more accessible to Angelenos. Representatives from the mayor’s office will be available to receive suggestions and concerns, while providing customer service.
The Mobile Help Desk will visit locations across Los Angeles twice a month in each Council District.

Partnership to Expand Export Financing for Small and Medium Businesses
Mayor Eric Garcetti and Export-Import Bank of the United States Chairman Fred P. Hochberg have announced a new partnership help Los Angeles-based small- and medium-sized export businesses get loans so they can have greater access to foreign markets.

Mayor Garcetti’s Minority Business Development Agency can now process loan applications for Los Angeles businesses for financing through the Export-Import Bank’s Global Credit Express program, designed to help those small businesses which might be locked out of conventional financing markets or need liquidity to finance exports.
Through this new partnership, Los Angeles-based small- and medium-sized export businesses may be eligible for a 6- or 12-month revolving line of credit of up to $500,000 through the Ex-Im Bank’s Global Credit Express program.
The Minority Business Development Agency Business Center – Los Angeles, is operated by the University of Southern California in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development.

Battleship Iowa Offers Fundraising Program to Nonprofits
The Pacific Battleship Center has launched a community program aimed at helping other nonprofit groups raise money by creating a customized online ticket program.
The program aligns with Battleship IOWA’s mission to catalyze community and economic development, with strong focus on the Los Angeles Waterfront region. Similar efforts include a cooperating marketing agreement with other arts and cultural groups along the Waterfront, discounted event fees for veteran and community groups, and programming that serves public school students.
Subscribers will create a unique “Partner Account” with Battleship IOWA’s sales office, and visitors who buy tickets through that link will automatically make a donation to the nonprofit subscriber.
