It’s always hard to understand why any director would choose to tarnish the memory of the project that made their career. Lucas. Spielberg. And now, Ridley Scott. These guys have vaults like Scrooge McDuck, so what makes them so careless with their legacy?
Shakespeare by the Sea opened their remarkable 15thseason of free plays by the Bard of Avon last Thursday at San Pedro’s Point Fermin Park Bandshell, which has been their home base as they spread the Shakespearean words to audiences this year in 23 different venues around the Southland in three different counties.
Last year Sacred Fools Theater in Hollywood gave one of the best performances of the year withWatson: The Last Adventure of the World’s Greatest Detective, reviewed here and voted one of L.A.’s best by us and several other newspapers.
This year, they have reunited one of that production’s stars, French Stewart, withWatson’sdirector Jaime Robledo forStoneface: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Buster Keaton, playing through June 30, and it is sure to be on the “Best”lists this year. Stewart plays Keaton in a role written for him by Vanessa Claire Stewart, who co-wroteLouis and Keely: Live at the Saharafor them (and who recently married Stewart, incidentally,) and he proves himself a master of Keaton-style slapstick. Equally important is the depth he brings to Keaton the workaholic and alcoholic who suffered more behind the camera than he ever did in front of it.

Director Rupert Sanders unadulterated take on Snow White is a refreshing gore-filled romp through a world colored by the effects of good and evil. Everyone knows a version of the original(s), so I can skip spoiling the plot. This story is about beauty and power, age and class position (the later, much less).

Poor Maria! All her life she’s dreamed of being a lounge singer in Reno, but growing up in failing convent-turned-mall run by the Sisters isn’t as fabulous as she would like. She receives a new lease on life (and a reprieve from the hot-dog-on-a-stick cart) when she goes to assist the owner of the mall daycare manage unruly children. Will Maria find love or will she receive the calling? Will the Sisters save the mall or will they lose their home to a certain goose-stepping jeweler? These questions (and more) will be answered when SCC presents The Sounds of Muzak.

The Wisconsin race was perhaps the most watched election of the night with Gov. Scott Walker beating recall opponent by nearly 7 percentage points at 53.2 percent for Walker and 46.3 for Tom Barrett.
California’s Republicans, in search of a silver lining in this election gloated with glee the passage of pension reform initiatives in San Diego and San Jose—reforms that echo that of Wisconsin governor Scott Walker who beat the recall drive the same night. The ballot initiatives that passed in the two cities are very similar, with the following attributes:
LOS ANGELES — Chicano activist Carlos Montes plead no contest, June 5, to perjury for failing to disclose he was convicted of a felony when he purchased a gun in 2010.
The 64-year-old Alhambra man was sentenced to three years probation, given credit for one day served in county jail, ordered to complete 180 hours of community service and told he could not posses any weapons.

Sapphire Solace
For this Goth/Alternative Rock duo, composed of veteran guitarist, Rick Joyce and singer/songwriter Velvet Shadow, Sapphire Solace is a collaborative effort. Velvet Shadow a veteran soloist and songwriter released an untitled five track EP in 2006. In that same year she began working on a side project titled Dream Cypher with Alex G of the Industrial/Gothic band EvilMoon Project. It was during the end of 2006 , that the beginnings of Sapphire Solace began, with Joyce working on a track she had previously submitted to him. After working together on Velvet Shadow’s music, they both decided to collaborate on an entire project together, and Sapphire Solace began. Starts at 9p.m. Check them out on Facebook.
