On Friday night, I anxiously peered through the movie theatre dim for a gun totting psychopath. I scanned the exits, though doubtless, I would’ve been powerless to protect myself or anyone around me from harm. Call it irrational paranoia or rational cautiousness, I feared that a copy cat or a conspirator in league with James Eagan Holmes would visit death upon the audience. We see movies to temporarily escape the realities of our lives yet, while we share the director’s vision, we are terribly vulnerable to acts of violent lunacy. As the trailers rolled by, I wondered how this hadn’t happened before and how long before it will happen again.

Coalition of Labor and Progressive Groups Announced Global Boycott of Hyatt Hotels

This morning local branch of Unite Here organized a demonstration in support of today’s unveling of a global boycott campaign against Hyatt Hotels to protest what it describes as abusive working conditions. Unite Here, along with a coalition of labor unions and progressive groups that include the National Football League Players Association has ramped up a boycott of Hyatt hotels.

Scalers Union Tells Clean Harbors to Clean Up its Act

On July 20, ILWU Local 56 Scalers Union and other labor demonstrators held a press conference outside the Clean Harbors Environmental Services facilities in Gardena as a warning to clean up their act. A long history of environmental violations trail the Massachusetts based environmental services company, ranging from the Department of Toxic Substances Control, California Air Resources Board, and the state’s Water Resources Board.

“We’re here to warn the harbor community that Clean Harbors has a spotty record when it comes to protecting workers and the public,” said Ruben Hurtado, Business Agent and Dispatcher at Local 56. Local 56 President Ilugardo Gonzalez added, “It’s disappointing to see an environmental clean-up firm operating here who’s been charged with so many violations of clean air and water laws.” Local 56 Secretary-Treasurer Enrique Marin said.

Firefighters Battle Ken Malloy Blaze

At about 2 p.m., brush fire burned through an area of Ken Malloy Regional Park, where Wilmington, Harbor City and San Pedro meet.

Officials were unable to specify the size of the fire or the percentage of containment at the time of this report.

Dance Fest is an annual showcase of the diverse performing ensembles in residence at the award-winning Homeland Cultural Center in Long Beach’s MacArthur Park. The event will feature performances by Homeland Street Dance Crew, West Afrikan Drum and Dance Ensemble, Hmong Association of Long Beach, Ballet Folklorico Maria, Homeland Funkstylers, Ancient Khmer Martial Arts, Orlando Greenhill and Sound Army and Funkdation. Admission is free.

Nothing conjures up the brutality of slavery like that of blood sprayed upon unpicked cotton. A faustian bargain is struck between a freed slave named Django and a bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz. In exchange for eyeballing a fugitive for Shultz, Django gets his freedom and a reunion with his wife, Broomhilda Von Shaft; her name likely makes her an ancestor of John Shaft, an icon of the Blaxploitation genre which greatly influenced the film’s director, Quentin Tarantino.

Something of Silver Offers Alternative to Shakespeare’s Problem Play

Summer in Los Angeles means, amongst other things, free Shakespeare, and not just from San Pedro’s resident company Shakespeare by the Sea. There are performances in the San Fernando Valley, in the San Gabriel Valley and elsewhere, usually of two of the Bard’s plays: a comedy and a tragedy.

West Hollywood also gets into the act, but with a distinct, and very delicious differences, offering up Something of Silver, a musical written and directed by Tony Tanner that takes a more modern look at Shakespeare’s problematic comedy.

Free Safe Space Training
The Center Long Beach and OC GLSEN to Offer Free Safe Space Training to youth service providers July through September.

The Center’s MYTE program and OC GLSENhave teamed up to offer several free seminars to train educators and youth providers in implementing the Safe Space model to improve the lives of LGBT youth throughout greater Long Beach.

Safe Space training provides a program for action that youth providers can implement to create a positive learning environment for every child. These free seminars will equip youth service providers and educators with strategies for supporting LGBT students, including how to educate youth about anti-LGBT bias and how to serve as an ally to LGBT youth.

MYTE is offering two, three session monthly trainings through September.
Session 1: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 19
Session 2: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4 or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16
Session 3: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 8 or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13

Late Saturday Night with the Damon Rentie Quintet at Seabird Jazz Lounge

All you need for a good night are a good car, good friends, good food, drinks and good music. This past Saturday all of the above finally came together but it took a little while.

I intended on checking out a show in Century City but upon our arrival at the venue — early no less — my friends and I were faced with a four-block long line of people waiting to get inside. A line that kept getting longer by the minute.

To save the evening, we trekked back to Long Beach for a promising live jazz show at the Seabird Jazz Lounge. After driving across three freeways to get back to Long Beach, it was nice to walk into a club hearing what I was expecting to hear: Cool jazz on a summer evening. With the Damon Rentie Quintet performing, the effect on the senses was soothing.
