LOS ANGELES – On the year anniversary of her first day in office, Dec. 12, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will deliver an address at 9 a.m on the Westside of Los Angeles.
“This year, we have confronted challenges before us with urgency and unity,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “Together, we brought thousands of Angelenos inside who were suffering on our streets. Together, we invested in a comprehensive safety strategy that has resulted in a recent record of police academy applications as well as expansions of community-based safety solutions. Together, we’re attracting businesses to come to our city, building a greener Los Angeles and improving city services. When we were faced with crises – whether it was a hurricane or a disastrous fire, we got through them together – and together, with urgency, collaboration and innovation, we will continue to build a better future in every neighborhood, for every Angeleno. Nothing will stop Los Angeles.”
Announcements last week included:
Homelessness and Housing:
- More than 21,000 Angelenos have come inside since December 2022, thousands more than last year, as Mayor Bass deployed a new and urgent strategy to reduce homelessness.
- More than 9,000 units of affordable housing are now being accelerated as a result of her executive directive to streamline their development.
Public Safety:
- LAPD reported that homicides and violent crime are both down this year compared to last year.
- In August, LAPD said 1,048 people applied to the department, the largest number of applications in a single month since September 2020.
- Mayor Bass established an Office of Community Safety to prevent crime through community-led approaches to increase safety and wellbeing.
Business and Economic Development:
- California’s leading business bank, Banc of California, will be relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles.
- Thousands of businesses have opened over the past year in Los Angeles.
- Mayor Bass established a small business policy team and issued Executive Directive 4 to support small business creation, development and growth in Los Angeles by implementing practices like the provision of virtual and in-person counter services for businesses looking to open or expand.
Climate and Sustainability:
- Hundreds of millions of dollars secured through state and federal partners as Los Angeles continues to lead on climate.
- Building on the work of former mayors, Mayor Bass has been able to deliver on progress to build a greener Los Angeles.
City Services:
- Los Angeles delivered 100,000 more services this year than last year.
- More than 2,500 Angelenos have been hired to join the city to address vacancies.
- Metro ridership has increased every month of 2023.
On Dec. 12 Mayor Bass will be mark her one year anniversary serving as Mayor and will host a telephone town hall.
