Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix to Debut on LA Waterfront

SAN PEDRO Later this month, the Port of Los Angeles will host the first-ever Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix, a high-speed, hydrofoiling sailboat racing event that takes place close to shore, as part of the SailGP 12-race global circuit spanning four continents. Thousands of spectators are expected to gather around the LA Waterfront’s Outer Harbor racecourse the weekend of July 22-23 for SailGP’s Los Angeles debut.

SailGP’s fast-paced racing uses the high-tech F50 – 50-foot catamarans with 80-foot wingsails that fly over the water at 60+ mph speeds with daring maneuvers and close competition guaranteeing an up-close spectator experience.

“We are excited to welcome SailGP to the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles,’’ said Los Angeles City Councilmember Tim McOsker. “Our Outer Harbor is known for its consistent wind conditions particularly for smaller sailing crafts and windsurfers. This location will make for a challenging, exciting competition, and the wide variety of local restaurants and waterfront activities will make the experience memorable for visiting SailGP race fans.”

SailGP features 10 national teams comprising the best athletes in the sport representing the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland. Los Angeles is the second event in SailGP’s Season 4.
