District 5 Councilwoman Gerrie Schiepske recently announced the availability of Nextdoor, a secure social network for neighborhoods to foster neighbor-to-neighbor and citywide communication. Residents within District 5 can use Nextdoor to create websites for their specific neighborhoods. Enrollment enables individual residents to form relationships with their neighbors by asking questions and exchanging local advice and recommendations. Topics of discussion on Nextdoor are as varied as local events, school activities, babysitter recommendations, plumbing advice, disaster preparedness, recent crime activity, upcoming garage sales, or even lost pets.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power cautions residents to beware of impostors posing as utility personnel making service-related house calls. These impostors seek to gain access to residential property in order to
steal valuables from the occupant.
White Point Landslide Findings To Be Unveiled
Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino announced that City Engineer Gary Lee Moore will present his findings of the geo-technical report about the White Point Landslide at a community meeting, at 6:30 p.m. June 18, at the White Point Elementary School auditorium in San Pedro. The verbal report will detail the factors that contributed to the slide, as well as proposed repair options, and the estimated cost associated with each. The written report will be available online June 19 on the Department of Engineering’s website.

Shakespeare by the Sea opened their remarkable 15thseason of free plays by the Bard of Avon last Thursday at San Pedro’s Point Fermin Park Bandshell, which has been their home base as they spread the Shakespearean words to audiences this year in 23 different venues around the Southland in three different counties.

Last year Sacred Fools Theater in Hollywood gave one of the best performances of the year withWatson: The Last Adventure of the World’s Greatest Detective, reviewed here and voted one of L.A.’s best by us and several other newspapers.
This year, they have reunited one of that production’s stars, French Stewart, withWatson’sdirector Jaime Robledo forStoneface: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Buster Keaton, playing through June 30, and it is sure to be on the “Best”lists this year. Stewart plays Keaton in a role written for him by Vanessa Claire Stewart, who co-wroteLouis and Keely: Live at the Saharafor them (and who recently married Stewart, incidentally,) and he proves himself a master of Keaton-style slapstick. Equally important is the depth he brings to Keaton the workaholic and alcoholic who suffered more behind the camera than he ever did in front of it.

Everyone knows a version of the original(s), so I can skip spoiling the plot. This story is about beauty and power, age and class position (the later, much less).

Poor Maria! All her life she’s dreamed of being a lounge singer in Reno, but growing up in failing convent-turned-mall run by the Sisters isn’t as fabulous as she would like. She receives a new lease on life (and a reprieve from the hot-dog-on-a-stick cart) when she goes to assist the owner of the mall daycare manage unruly children. Will Maria find love or will she receive the calling? Will the Sisters save the mall or will they lose their home to a certain goose-stepping jeweler? These questions (and more) will be answered when SCC presents The Sounds of Muzak.
The SCC is a community ensemble of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight performers, and their allies, dedicated to presenting high quality musical shows and events that enrich lives and affirm equality for all people. Based in the gay and lesbian community, SCC outreaches to include parents, families, and friends.
