Junipero Sports Court Project Set to Kick Off in January 2024, Bringing a Boost to Community Recreation

LONG BEACH — The City of Long Beach has entered into contracts with a general contractor with a targeted January 2024 construction start for the Junipero Sports Court project.

The Junipero Beach Sports Court project will expand recreational amenities at Junipero Beach.

The city received its Local Coastal Development Permit from the Long Beach Community Development Department in April 2023 and a Coastal Development Permit De Minimis Waiver from the California Coastal Commission for the project in July 2023. Additionally, in December 2023, the National Fish and Wildlife Fund South Coast Shoreline Parks and Outdoor Recreation Grants Program notified the city that it intends to award $150,000 for the project for the roller skate area, basketball court, shade structure, and planting of native landscaping.

The city expects the project to be substantially complete with the sports courts and skating area, barring unforeseen delays, by May 2024. Additional work associated with native landscaping may be postponed to align with seasonal planting schedules for local habitat.

The contractor is scheduled to perform work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The beach path will remain open during construction. Efforts will be made to minimize
