Author Robert Lee Johnson Reveals History of Hub City
On Dec. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., author Robert Lee Johnson will share the unknown story of a city notorious for its hip-hop dreams and gangster fantasies at Rancho Dominguez in Carson.
The discussion will feature a Q-and-A session with the author, followed by a book signing and reception after the program.
Johnson is the chairman of the Projects Committee of the Historic Council at the CaliforniaAfrican-AmericanHistoryMuseum. A former co-coordinator of the Black Panther Party’s Compton branch, the author now lectures about local history and teaches a civil rights class at OTIS. He has resided in Compton with his family since 1961.
Compton, part of the Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant, was settled by forty-niners in 1867. The city has seen many pivotal events such as the 1910 international air meet and the earthquake of 1933.
Tours of the Rancho will be available before and after the event. A $4 donation is suggested to help fund future museum programs.
