AOC7 Literacy Fair
AOC7 needs volunteers for their first annual Literacy Fair, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11, at Macarthur Park in Long Beach.
There will be music, multicultural dances, literacy booths, storytelling and more.  All children will receive a new or gently used book.  Please make a difference in your community on this day by signing up to be a volunteer.

Undocumented, Queer Talking Circles at The Center
Beginning May 11, The Center Long Beach will host an Undocumented and Queer Talking Circle, on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
The Center is partnering with the Long Beach Immigrants Rights Coalition to a space for undocumented LGBTQ folks to engage with peers in a safe and supportive environment. If you are undocumented and identify as LGBTQ, this space is for you.

LB City Council Votes on Project Spending
The Long Beach City Council will consider, May 14, whether to approve a contract increase the Job Order Contracting from by $9.86 million.
The Job Order Contracting contractors, New Creation Builders, Exbon Development, Bitech Construction, Allstate Engineering and Thomasville Construction would be authorized to increase from $15 million to more than $24.86 million, as authorized by the Board of Commissioners to the Port of Long Beach executive director for tenant and security improvements at the interim Port Headquarters Building at 4801 Airport Plaza Drive.
The city council will also consider whether to allow an agreement change with RJM Design Group Inc. to increase their contract from $450,000 to $1.2 million, to proceed with the long-term Belmont Pool Revitalization Project and construct a temporary 50-meter pool on the facility’s parking lot.

Long Beach Asthma Resource Fair
The Asthma Resource Fair will provide numerous resources and educational materials for community members to learn more about asthma management and the related services offered in the community, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18, at Admiral Kidd Park in Long Beach.

La Gran Limpieza
The Friends of the Los Angeles River are hosting the 24th Annual Great LA River Clean Up, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. May 18.
Volunteers are needed at 15 river sites.

Long Beach Pride Rainbow Run
Join the Long Beach Pride Rainbow Run, a 10k and a 5K rainbow extravaganza, at 7 a.m. May 19, starting at Junipero and Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach.
Proceeds from the run will go directly to LGBTQ and ally serving non-profit organizations.

Community Baby Shower
Donate to the Community Baby Shower, which take place at 3 p.m. May 29, at the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services.
Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, Long Beach Cares and Long Beach Public Health Nurses host the event to provide “basic going-home newborn kits” for low-income mothers after giving birth in local hospitals.
Donation items include diapers, diaper bags, baby wipes, bibs, onesies, socks, blankest, hats and mittens. Monetary contributions also are accepted.
Donations can be dropped off Mondays and Wednesdays at 2760 N. Studebaker Road in Long Beach.

Long Beach Gun Buyback
The City Long Beach will be hosting a gun buyback event, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 8, at the North Police Sub-Station.
The goal of the program is to reduce the number of guns in the public domain by offering gift cards for unwanted firearms.

  • Non-functioning firearms: $50 gift card
  • Handguns, rifles and shotguns: $100 gift card
  • Assault rifles: $200 gift card

Applications Open for Cars and Stripes
Anyone interested to enter their car in the upcoming Cars and Stripes event, scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m. June 28, at the Port of Los Angeles, must register by June 14.
