Meet the Grunion
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will be offering a “Meet the Grunion” program, at 8 p.m. May 25 and June 10.
Prior to the predicted run, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion. The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors, students, and children.
Grunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. They are found from central California through Baja California, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to

At times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate. The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs. Then both males and females catch the next wave back out to sea. The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch, and carries them back out to sea.

POLAHS Green Festival Announcement
Port of Los Angeles High School is hosting the 2nd Annual Green Festival, from 12 to 3 p.m. May 31, in San Pedro.
The event is student-run, and will feature environmental technologies like solar power, aquaponics and electric cars. There will be an E-waste collection, locally-grown vegetables for sale, and important information on fracking, the controversial fossil fuel extraction method coming to California. Bring your DWP bill and get a free fruit tree from Million Trees LA.

Visit the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, from 12 to 5 p.m. June 8, for World Ocean Day.
This free one-day event brings together the community to celebrate the ocean and share how important it is in our lives.
Themes like conservation of our urban coastline and getting to know the precious inhabitants of our ocean will be explored in family-oriented activities like arts and crafts, scavenger hunts and animal stories.

Sunday Storytime
It’s story time at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
Join the aquarium’s educators and volunteers as they share ocean tales at the “Sunday Story Studio,” from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. June 9. Listeners of all ages can join along and be part of the story by integrating puppets and other props or may choose to read a book of their own. This is a free activity; however, reservations are requested for groups.
