Night at the Aquarium
Community members are invited, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31, to a free night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, hosted by Councilman Robert Garcia.
The event is open to all Long Beach residents and anyone who would enjoy the aquariums displays and educational activities. RSVP.

A Cleaner Port, A Brighter Future
The authors of A Cleaner Port, A Brighter Future: The Greening of the Port of Los Angeles will be signing their children’s book, from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7, at Williams’ Bookstore in San Pedro.
One of the authors lives in Rancho Palos Verdes. The book lets people know about what is happening at the Port of Los Angeles, where ships can run on electricity at the docks instead of burning diesel fuel, what the Water Resource Action Plan does to keep trash and chemicals from polluting water and environmental projects to provide good homes for plants and animals.

Feb. 9
Cooking Class at the Historic Dominguez Rancho
The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will host a beginner’s cooking class Feb. 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will learn how to make a Rancho Chili dating back to the 1800’s. The class is free, however donations are welcomed.

Feb. 9
Junior Biologist: Marine Mammals
The Aquarium of the Pacific will host the Junior Biologist: Marine Mammals, Feb. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Junior Biologist program is to encourage marine biology to younger children. This will be a two-hour class including theme related activities, guided tour of the galleries and interaction with the animal-care staff. Tickets will cost $24 a child, but $19 if they are a member. Those prices are not included with aquarium admission. Pre-registration is required for this class. Children ages 7 to 12 are allowed to participate only.

Storytelling And Reading

The San Pedro Library will host Storytelling and Reading, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m. Children come and discover a love for storytelling and reading with uncle David. Read three times with uncle David and receive a free book.

5 Gyres: Saving our Synthetic Seas

The Aquarium of the Pacific will host 5 Gyres: Saving our Synthetic Seas, Feb. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Experts will discuss their work to study plastic in the ocean, as you walk around an exhibition on the global impact of plastic on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Tickets will be $5, but free of charge for marine members.

Feb. 17
Salt Marsh Open House

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium presents Salt Marsh Open House, Feb. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join marine educators to learn about the Salinas de San Pedro wetlands habitat at Cabrillo Beach, by using binoculars and microscopes to observe live animals. This event is free of charge.
