POLA Hosts Public Workshop on Master Plan Update
The Port of Los Angeles invites community members to a public workshop on the Port Master Plan Update, at 6 p.m. July 19, at Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington.

The Port Master Plan is the document that guides the planning and future development of the Port of Los Angeles.

Document Shredding and Recycling Event
District 6 Councilman Dee Andrews will be hosting a document shredding and recycling event, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 21, at King Park in Long Beach.

All types items can be shredded accept X-rays and CDs. Items that can be recycled are televisions, computer monitors, computers, laptops, keyboards, printers, hard drives, fax machines, microwave ovens, DVD players, VCR’s, cables and cords, telephones, cell phones, radios, shredders, stereo components, power supplies, tape and zip drives, and electronic devices.

The first 5 boxes of shredding documents, per car, are free. Anything beyond will cost a fee of $5 per box.

The companies cannot accept: large appliances, toner cartridges, fluorescent bulbs or batteries of any kind.

Citizenship Workshop
Rep. Janice Hahn is hosting a citizenship workshop, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 21, at the Wilmington Boys and Girls Club.

The workshop is a great opportunity for legal residents in our communities to receive free legal assistance with processing their citizenship applications.

Aug. 17
Back-to-School Backpack Drive
Join Long Beach Rescue Mission in giving children the opportunity to succeed.
The mission partners with local schools to fill and hand out thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies to local middle schools to distribute to the children who need them most.

This past year, more than 3,000 children in the greater Long Beach area received backpacks and schools supplies that helped them start the school year successfully.
It’s a privilege to collaborate with the Long Beach School District, which selected the following middle schools that will benefit with backpacks and the list of required items.

  • Franklin
  • Lindburgh
  • Stephens
  • Washington
  • Lindsey
  • Robinson
  • Jefferson
  • Avalon on Catalina Island

Here’s how you can help:

  • Purchase a NEW solid color backpack.
  • Fill it with supplies from the list below. Please do not add extra items.
  • Drop the backpack off at the mission before Aug. 17.

If you’re short of time donate directly to http://tinyurl.com/LB-Rescue-Mission and the mission will fill a backpack for you.

  • 1 – 3” three-ring hard binder
  • 2 – one-subject spiral notebooks
  • 2 – packages of college ruled notebook paper
  • 1 – 12-pack of black or blue ballpoint pens
  • 1 – 12-pack of #2 pencils with erasers
  • 1 – 6-pack or 12-pack of red ballpoint pens
  • 1 – 12” ruler
  • 1 – pink eraser
  • 1 – plastic pencil/pen holder (3-hole)
  • 1 – 8-pack or 12-pack of washable markers
  • 1 – package of 3×5 cards
