Los Angeles–On June 28, the Los Angeles Unified School District board approved the 2012-13 budget by a 6 to 1 vote that fully funds after-school programs, and provides partial funding for adult education and early childhood education. According to the LAUSD’s media relations department, Adult Ed has been restored by 48percent, and 105,000 students will be served.

Little is known about how this will impact Adult Education, except that principals will be leading several Adult Schools instead of one. Gertrude Hawkins, current principal of Harbor Occupational Center will be the principal of the adult schools at Narbonne High School, San Pedro High School, and Banning High School.  The district’s media relations department said it will announce what classes will be available on July 26 on its website.

The school board closed a $390 million deficit in a $6.03 billion budget going into a new school year. Since 2008-09, the District has faced a cumulative $2.7 billion deficit, mostly resulting from reductions in state funding. But if Governor Jerry Brown’s initiatives fail in November, all of education will be impacted.

Superintendent John Deasy and other board members credited organized teachers and employees for choosing to cut their salaries by working fewer days, allowing the District to reduce spending significantly. Moreover, the agreements preserved more than 6,200 jobs, according to District figures.

“This budget is only possible because of a set of shared sacrifices with our labor partners,” said Superintendent John Deasy.

LAUSD Announces Adult Education Classes

LOS ANGELES – On July 18, the LAUSD announced that its Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE) will begin offering classes on Aug. 14. The classes will be held at multiple locations/branches that serve communities throughout the District.

This year, DACE will offer academic basic and secondary education, English as a Second Language, as well as programs for older adults, and adults with disabilities for a $30 class fee. For career technical education classes, prospective students should contact their school of choice for class fee information.

Registration runs Aug. 6 – 10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Beginning Monday, July 30, students should contact the branch site listed below for registration information.
