Housing Long Beach to Stage March and Protest on Downtown Slumlords

LONG BEACH—Housing Long Beach will lead a march through downtown Long Beach tomorrow, protesting the conditions of three slum buildings and demanding that conditions improve. The owners of the three buildings have recently appeared on a list of landlords who have frequently been cited for code violations. The march will go to a total of three locations and will end with a block party at the third location. The third location will also include a brief program featuring renters from across Long Beach sharing their stories of displacement and poor living conditions. Residents will also continue the call for just-cause eviction protections in the form of a Responsible Renter’s Ordinance.

The march begins tomorrow at 555 Pacific Ave., 3:00 p.m., proceeds to 426 Magnolia Ave.  at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 339 and 345 Daisy Ave, 5:00 p.m.

Long Beach renter’s comprise 58 percent of the city’s population and is one of the largest renter populations on the west coast with no renter protections at the municipal level. Along with Long Beach residents, Housing Long Beach is advocating for the establishment of just-cause eviction protections in the form of a Responsible Renter’s Ordinance (www.housinglb.org/justcause).
