Nov. 8
California Chili Cooking on the Rancho
Learn how to make chili from what is thought to be the earliest known chili recipe found in California, from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 8, at Rancho Adobe Museum.
It dates back to the early 1800s and was a staple item made on the Rancho. Large batches would be made in the outside kitchen and served to all that worked on the lands. This class is only $25.
Cooking on the Rancho is a unique experience where you get to cook, learn about the history of cooking on the California Ranchos, and create your own great early Rancho recipes.

Tidepool Wonders
Explore low tides on the rocky shore with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in Nov. 8, 9, 22 and 23.
Bring family and friends to the aquarium’s John M. Olguin Auditorium for an informative slide show with an educationstaff member, followed by a guided walk to the nearby Point Fermin Tidepools.
The area provides a home to a variety of local animals and seaweeds. Among the organisms are tidepool sculpin, sea urchins, sea hares, hermit crabs, feather-boa kelp, and an occasional octopus. An accessible pathway leads to the edge of the tidepools.

Future of Food Series Focuses on Sustainability
Los Angeles Times Food Editor Russ Parsons will moderate discussions with experts including authors, organic farmers, and a celebrity chef.
Starting this fall, the Aquarium of the Pacific will present The Future of Food, an ongoing series of talks hosted by Los Angeles Times Food Editor Russ Parsons and featuring experts representing different sectors of the American food system.
On Nov. 10, author Paul Greenberg will discuss ways to reestablish sustainable local fisheries and connect them with consumers. Greenberg is the author of American Catch: The Fight for Our Local Seafood. On February 4, 2015, Belcampo Inc. CEO Anya Fernald, an expert on the slow food movement and agritourism, will discuss humanely raised organic meat. On May 7, 2015, organic farmer David “Mas” Masumoto will discuss organic farming and its connections to the humanities. Masumoto is the author of Four Seasons in Five Senses and Wisdom of the Last Farmer. On October 7, 2015, Chef Michael Cimarusti will discuss how the fine dining industry can get involved with sustainable food. Cimarusti, owner and chef of Providence Restaurant in Los Angeles, has appeared on Bravo TV’s Top Chef Masters and Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Providence has been named the best restaurant in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times for two years running. Additional quarterly events in the series will be scheduled in coming months.
Tickets for this series are available by phone or online. The cost is $8 for member and $10 non-members. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the aquarium’s exhibits during Future of Food events. The talks will also be streamed live on the aquarium’s website.

LB Confidential: A Night of Noir
The Long Beach Public Library Foundation announces a special event on Nov. 11, at The Federal Bar Speakeasy.
The event is in coordination with the upcoming Bouchercon 2014: “Murder at the Beach,” an international mystery writers’ conference coming to the Long Beach Convention Center Nov. 13 through 16.
The Library Foundation has been chosen as the recipient charity for the proceeds of Bouchercon 2014. Bouchercon is an annual world mystery conference where readers, writers, publishers, editors, agents, booksellers and other lovers of the crime fiction genre gather for a long weekend of education, entertainment and fun.

Pints For A Cause
Ninkasi Brewing is teaming up with Simmzy’s “Pints For A Cause,” Nov. 12, supporting the Beer Autism Hope Movement and Lance’s Room autism charity.
On Nov. 12, $1 of each Ninkasi pint sold at all locations will go to support Lance’s Room.
The Beer Autism Hope Movement began in honor of Lance Rice, a beer historian with autism who overcame incredible odds at 55-years-old and embarked on a 35,000 mile brewery tour (including a stop at Ninkasi Brewing in Eugene, Ore.) in 2013 to raise awareness for autism. What began as a journey for Lance to fulfill his dream to author an American Brewing History Book became a miracle for the autism community and a movement to give back. The Beer Autism Hope Movement supports the autism community nationwide through Lance’s Room charity as well as charitable causes within the beer industry – from scholarships and vocational training for the disabled to sustainable farming and more.
“Pints For A Cause” was established by Ninkasi’s Beer is Love donations program. The brewery encourages community give-back throughout all states in which it operates. One such way, is by hosting various “Pints For A Cause” events at its brewery and accounts, where a portion of proceeds is donated to a selected community organization.
