Long Beach Speed Limit Reductions
As of summer 2023, the City of Long Beach has lowered speed limits throughout its streets. Following a vote from city council in December 2022, the city is moving forward with posting reduced speed limits on 111 street segments totaling 92 miles. These include streets in all types of neighborhoods in every council district. Notably, 50 segments totaling 37.7 miles will now have speed limits of 20 mph or less.
Additionally, 3.5 miles of roadway qualified for speed limit reductions due to their classification as Business Activity Districts or BID, where lower speed limits can help promote increased public safety where high levels of retail and dining are located.
Long Beach-Based Nonprofit Selected to Establish Community Land Trust
LONG BEACH — The Long Beach City Council Sept. 12 awarded a contract to social and environmental entrepreneurs, a fiscal sponsor for Long Beach Residents Empowered (LiBRE), to establish and operate a Community Land Trust or CLT.
LiBRE was selected for its qualifications and experience with affordable housing and trust among Long Beach residents and neighborhood organizations. As part of its two-year contract with the city, LiBRE will be provided up to $800,000 in one-time, start-up funds to launch a CLT and identify additional operational, housing acquisition, and/or development funding to increase the city’s affordable housing stock for lower-income and very low-income residents.
