ILWU Mobilizes Relief Effort for Fire Victims in Hawaii

Every local and division of the ILWU in the Los Angeles Harbor Area has mobilized to help victims of the Hawaii fire by filling shipping containers with relief supplies at the ILWU Memorial Hall in Wilmington for delivery to Maui. 

In record time, the union filled six 40-foot cargo containers with relief supplies to fire-stricken areas of Maui, Hawaii. 

The Presidents of ILWU Locals 13, 63, and 94 Pacific Coast Pensioners’ President put out a call for all hands on deck on ways to help — materially and financially — wildfire victims in Hawaii.

Donated items including baby food, diapers, wipes, toiletries (toothbrushes, body wash, soap), sleeping bags, pillows, bedding, clothing, towels, and sandals. More than 90 people were confirmed dead in Maui, Hawaii as a result of three major fires on the island. And as reports continue to flow out, blame has largely settled on the lack of communication and warning to the islanders.

Adam Weintraub, a spokesperson for the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said as much during a news conference, explaining that records indicate that neither the state nor the county activated sirens. He described Hawaii’s integrated outdoor siren system as the largest in the world, with about 400 sirens spread across the state. 

The drive was so successful that the union announced that it won’t be receiving any more donated items. But if you’d like to donate financially, you still can. Contact the ILWU Credit Union at 310-834-6411 and ask to contribute to the Kokua Maui Fund.
