Local Briefs: Rancho LPG Update, Rainbow Services Anniversary and New Transit Center, Torrance

Councilmember McOsker on Rancho LPG Update

SAN PEDRO — Rancho LPG is a butane and propane storage facility within 1,200 ft. of pre-existing homes, schools, practically on “top” of two major traffic corridors. The facility is regulated by at least nine local, state and federal agencies.

Last week, the Los Angeles City Council passed Councilmember McOsker’s (CD15) motion asking for a report on the regulating authority for the water basin when it comes to the operations of the Rancho LPG site and its potential water contamination.

“With so many different jurisdictions overseeing this site, it’s an incredibly difficult issue to take on headfirst,” said McOsker. “But, I’m here to do my part as the Councilmember for the Harbor Area to begin cutting through the red tape and address this issue.”

Rainbow Services Celebrates 40 Years of Service

SAN PEDRO — Rainbow Services efforts began in the 1970’s when a group of women at the Harbor YWCA identified spousal abuse as a recurring theme in their support group discussions. In 1983, the group incorporated to become a nonprofit organization and acquired a three-bedroom house as their first official shelter — Rainbow House — which was leased by a local donor for one dollar a year. Today, Rainbow Services operates multiple sites including a community resource center, community education center,  community housing site, legal office, all located in downtown San Pedro; and a transitional housing complex and emergency shelter, both confidentially located to protect survivors who have fled an abusive partner.

Torrance Transit Center Breaks Ground

South Bay has a new transit center. On June 9 leaders cut the ribbon on the brand new Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center in Torrance.

Ground was first broken on this $30 million project back in 2018. Now, residents of Torrance and the South Bay have a central hub to access local and regional transit options, whether they’re transferring between bus lines or parking to hop on a bus to get to work, school, LAX or SoFi Stadium.

Notably, this transit center is set to be the final rail station for the Green Line Extension to Torrance. See it for yourself at 465 Crenshaw Blvd. Bus service began June 12.
