Why I Like Carson

The City of Carson celebrated 24 winners, grades 3-8, amongst city staff, the Public Relations Commission, contest judges, family and friends, school principals, coordinators, and teachers, as well as the City Council April 20, at the Carson Event Center. There were around 170 attendees.

This essay-writing contest was started in 1996 by the late Councilmember Mary Anne O’Neal to foster community pride among Carson youth. It is the original and first civic contest of its kind in the city.

Every year, Carson students submit entries that demonstrate why Carson is a great place to live, work and play. The winners of this contest exemplified excellence, creativity and civic pride through their essays. Each winner received a certificate, medal and gift card. The honorable mention awardees received $100; the 3rd place winners received $150; the 2nd place winners received $175; and the 1st place winners received $200.

The program included a poem reading, acknowledgement and recognition of the judges and participating schools, special remarks by the city council, a sit-down dinner, and the announcement of the winners.

“I am very proud of our Carson schools and students. Congratulations to the 24 winners. We look forward to a continued partnership with the schools to raise intelligent and civic-minded individuals,” said Mayor Davis-Holmes.
