Barragán Statement on New Car and Truck Pollution Rules from EPA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) April 12 released the following statement on the EPA’s new pollution standards for trucks and cars sold in the United States from 2027 to 2032.

“Today, the Biden Administration and EPA Administrator Regan proposed the strongest ever pollution rules for cars and trucks from Model Years 2027 to 2032. These new standards will dramatically improve public health outcomes for Latinos and communities of color in my district and across the country,” said Rep. Barragán.

“We will see fewer premature deaths and hospital admissions from respiratory illnesses such as asthma and lung cancer. The standards will also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, helping the United States lead in the fight against the climate crisis. And the new proposed light-duty vehicle rule will save consumers $12,000 over the life of the vehicle and help end our costly dependence on oil.

“For each rule, EPA offered a range of options for feedback that will determine the speed and scale of what is implemented. When Democrats in Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act, we made unprecedented investments in clean vehicles and electric charging to support manufacturers, communities, and consumers in the transition to zero-emission vehicles. These investments should give EPA and industry confidence that we can meet the strongest proposed standards.”

“I look forward to working with my colleagues, the Biden Administration, environmental justice advocates, and public health leaders to support the most ambitious rules possible.”
