Temperance by Yadira Agredano on view at Angels Gate Cultural Center
Open Studios Day, on Nov. 19, is a family event that provides the public a glimpse into the process, art, and lives of local artists who create at Angels Gate Cultural Center or AGCC. Angels Gate hosts one of the largest studio artist programs in the region with more than 50 studio artists working in ceramics, photography, painting, printmaking, writing, sculpture, videography and music. This self-guided tour of artist studios provides a unique opportunity to interact with the artists and purchase contemporary works of art. The event includes onsite performances, demonstrations and workshops from community classes and AGCC’s “Family Art Workshop” programs.
Masking indoors will be required.
Schedule of Events:
Family Art Workshop — Join with AGCC Artist-Teacher Carlos Gacharna @caduphoto for a free Family Art Workshop. You will create hanging string gardens inspired by the Japanese art-form of Kokedama, or ‘moss ball.’ Kokedama is a centuries-old garden art rooted in the exploration of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese term for finding the beauty in imperfection and transience.
Ceramics Sale in F building — purchase creations by local artists from AGCC’s ceramics program.
2:30 p.m., Join on the lawn by “Building A” for a special 40th Anniversary address.
3 to 4:30 p.m., Slanguage Across Generations. Meet and listen to Slanguage Studio artists discuss mentorship as part of the multigenerational Wilmington-based artist space.
On view in the galleries:
Artists At Work features a review of AAW fellows Taylor Griffith and Nancy Lynée Woo’s community engagement practice during their resident year. Nancy Woo has partnered with SBCC to provide poetry and writing focused programming for youth after school programs and the local Wilmington community. Taylor Griffith has extended his art practice from AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, exploring human impact on coastal ecosystems. The artists are sponsored by Artists At Work in Los Angeles County — a workforce resilience program in the spirit of the Works Progress Administration or WPA, which is designed to support the rebuilding of healthy communities through artistic civic engagement.
We Run Things, Things Don’t Run We celebrates 20 years of the Wilmington art space and de facto art school, Slanguage Studio. Curated by Gloria Gem Sánchez and Jynx Prado, the exhibition features the 20 contemporary artists who have contributed to Slanguage Studio’s long history: Yadira Agredano, Ben Avila, Raul Baltazar, Karla Diaz, Sarita Dougherty, Gaby, Alonso Garzon, Ed Gomez, EJ Hill, Raghubir Kintisch, Antonio De Jesus Lopez, Amitis Motevalli, Aydinaneth Ortiz, Perl, Jynx Prado, Felix F. Quintana, Guadalupe Rosales, Marlene Tafoya, Arnoldo Vargas and Mario Ybarra Jr.
