Lieu Cracks Down on “Swatting”
SACRAMENTO — Sen. Ted W. Lieu of Torrance introduced a new measure that will increase punishment for those who falsely report emergencies at homes of celebrities or public officials.
The bill would apply to any cases of false 911 reports. If a person is convicted of fabricating a report they will be held liable for all costs associated with their response.
The first policy hearing for the measure will take place on April 9.
The bill, which is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department, was created after many falsely reported threats in homes. These threats or “invaders” usually prompt deployment of special weapons and tactics teams. Police departments and other agencies have spent thousands of dollars as a result of these incidents.
