At about 2 p.m.,  brush fire burned through an area of Ken Malloy Regional Park, where Wilmington, Harbor City and San Pedro meet.

Officials were unable to specify the size of the fire or the percentage of containment at the time of this report.

However, Juan Benitez, the Parks and Recreation principal maintenance supervisor, said that it seemed to be burning south of a dam, in an area known as the lower wetlands.

The area is a seasonal wetland, which has water in the winter and is dry in the summer.

Historically, the homeless setup encampments in the southern end of the park raising the potential for fires in this area.

“About two years ago, — the last time it burned — LA Fire Department thought it was the homeless population who started it,” Benitez said.
