Free Safe Space Training
The Center Long Beach and OC GLSEN to Offer Free Safe Space Training to youth service providers July through September.
The Center’s MYTE program and OC GLSEN have teamed up to offer several free seminars to train educators and youth providers in implementing the Safe Space model to improve the lives of LGBT youth throughout greater Long Beach.
Safe Space training provides a program for action that youth providers can implement to create a positive learning environment for every child. These free seminars will equip youth service providers and educators with strategies for supporting LGBT students, including how to educate youth about anti-LGBT bias and how to serve as an ally to LGBT youth.
MYTE is offering two, three session monthly trainings through September.
Session 1: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 19
Session 2: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4 or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16
Session 3: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 8 or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13

Tour of Joint Water Pollution Control Plant
If you’ve ever wondered what happens to your waste water, take a tour of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 4, in Carson.
The tour is open to ages 7 and older. Cost is free.

710 Corridor Project Draft EIR Released for Public Review
Los Angeles – The California Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, the Southern California Association of Governments, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the Interstate 5 Joint Powers Authority have released the Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement on the Interstate 710 Corridor Project for a 60-day public review.
The environmental review is looking at proposals that would improve I-710 in Los Angeles County between Ocean Boulevard and State Route 60.
Major elements addressed in the Draft EIR/EIS include widening the I-710 freeway up to ten general purpose lanes (five lanes in each direction); modernizing and reconfiguring the Interstate 405, State Route 91 and a portion of the Interstate 5 interchanges with the I-710; modernizing and reconfiguring most local arterial interchanges along the I-710; and looking at a provision of a separate four-lane freight corridor to be used by conventional or zero-emission trucks.
Caltrans and Metro will host a series of public hearings in August to update the public on the Draft EIR/EIS and the potential effects this project may have on the environment. The Long Beach hearing date is from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8, at Silverado Community Center in Long Beach.

The Summer Night Light
The Summer Night Light project in Long Beach will provide extended hours of services with youth activities focused on empowerment, education, and employment, arts and culture initiatives, athletic leagues, parent empowerment workshops, fun family night activities, health screenings and neighborhood transformation projects.
The free Summer Food Supper Program will also be introduced, providing 750 free meals each day at the various Summer Night Light Park Sites from 6 to 9 p.m. through Aug. 31. Food Supper Program will be offered to all children up to age 18. No pre-registration is required.
Summer Night Light park-sites will be at Admiral Kidd Park, Drake Park and Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
