Kathy Finn Shatters Glass Ceiling as First Woman Elected President by UFCW 770 Membership

LOS ANGELES — In a groundbreaking moment for UFCW Local 770, Kathy Finn Feb 14 wins a historic victory, becoming the first woman to be elected president by the membership in the union’s history. Danny Garcia was elected secretary-treasurer and Joyce Roberson was elected recorder. All Executive Board members of Local 770, the majority of them rank-and-file members, have also been elected for another term.

The United Food and Commercial Workers or UFCW Local 770 represents nearly 30,000 members in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, and Kern counties in the grocery, cannabis, retail drug, healthcare, and packing industries.

Kathy Finn’s journey as a staunch advocate for workers’ rights began before she graduated from law school. Since 1990, her dedication has been evident in her role at UFCW 770, where she has protected the health and pension benefits of members. Serving as a trustee on the Southern California UFCW health and welfare fund and the pension fund, Kathy Finn has played a crucial role in safeguarding members’ well-being.

With 20 years as director of collective bargaining and five years as secretary-treasurer, Kathy Finn has been instrumental in negotiating fair contracts for members across the board, and strengthening the union’s democratic foundation. Her leadership underscores her continued commitment to advancing the interests of UFCW 770 members.

The UFCW 770 election marks a milestone, underscoring Kathy Finn’s dedication and the union’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Kathy’s leadership promises to usher in a new era for the local union, emphasizing progress, equity, and continued advocacy for workers’ rights.

In another first, UFCW’s newly elected executive board is comprised of more than 75% rank-and-file members, solidifying the union’s commitment to building member power.

The newly elected term will be July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027.
