CARSON — The City of Carson and the Carson Citizens Cultural Arts Foundation will present non-stop entertainment and many fun activities for the entire family as they host the 2023 Juneteenth Rhythm and Blues Celebration, featuring Ohio-based funk band, Slave, June 17. The event is open to the public.
Headlining band Slave had their first hit single Slide in 1977 — still considered a classic globally to this day. The outfit had a string of top-10 hits including Just a Touch of Love, Watching You, and Snap Shot. Other performers for the all-afternoon music festival include Greg Rose and the Greg Rose Orchestra, Sonny Green, and DJ Alcatraz.
“On behalf of all the citizens of the great City of Carson, I extend my sincerest appreciation to the Carson Citizens Cultural Arts Foundation for their exceptional dedication in ensuring a successful event each year to celebrate this important day in American history and I extend a heartfelt welcome to all our guests,” said Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes.
Juneteenth marks the date in history when African American slaves in Texas first received word that all slaves were free. The news came to Texas in June 1865, two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Aside from non-stop entertainment, Juneteenth also features various stage activities, a teen fun zone, and a variety of arts and crafts, food and display booths.
