Harbor Area Briefs: Inside Safe in Harbor City, Wilmington Mural Underway and Lomita Adopts District Based Elections

New Inside Safe Effort is Underway in Harbor City

LOS ANGELES  Mayor Karen Bass, Supervisor Janice Hahn and Councilman Tim McOsker announced June 1 that Inside Safe is underway in Harbor City. Inside Safe is a citywide, proactive housing-led strategy to bring people inside from tents and encampments, and to prevent encampments from returning. It is one feature in a comprehensive strategy to confront the homelessness crisis.

This is the 18th Inside Safe encampment operation throughout Los Angeles. The initiative is responsible for bringing more than 1,200 Angelenos inside.

Inside Safe supports the following five goals: Reduce the loss of life on our streets; Increase access to mental health and substance abuse treatment for those living in encampments; Eliminate street encampments; Promote long-term housing stability for people experiencing homelessness; Enhance the safety and hygiene of neighborhoods for all residents, businesses, and neighbors

Wilmington Mural Beautification

WILMINGTON — A mural in progress on the Wilmington YMCA building along Avalon Blvd., is being installed as an extension of the mural competition run last year as part of the ongoing beautification of Wilmington Town Square Park. The mural depicts a happy toddler playing with colorful building blocks and, in close up, two more children’s faces in joyful laughter encompassing a whole third of the mural. With the many talented local artists, and great support from the community for extending murals throughout the area, CD15 was able to provide funding for more community murals to come just three blocks from the park.

Lomita City Council Adopts Five-District Map, Transition to District Based Elections

LOMITA — Lomita City Council May 2 adopted an ordinance establishing the city’s first city council district map for district-based elections.

Starting with the November 2024 election cycle, residents of Lomita will vote for one city councilmember who lives in their district rather than voting for all city councilmembers. Districts 2 and 4 are up for election in 2024, and Districts 1, 3, and 5 are up for election in 2026. The council will continue to select the one member each year to serve as Mayor.
