Padilla Announces $633.8 Million in New Funding for Homeless Programs in CA

On April 18, Sen. Alex Padilla announced $633.8 million in new federal funding for homelessness and housing programs in the State of California.

This includes $525.8 million for grants for the Continuum of Care and Youth Homeless Demonstration Program. The Continuum of Care program provides funding to nonprofit organizations and state and local governments to quickly rehouse homeless people and minimize their trauma. The Youth Homeless Demonstration Program works with communities to help end youth homelessness.

In addition, $71.6 million will be reallocated to Emergency Rental Assistance grants. This money will be used to prevent people falling into homelessness. The program provides financial assistance, housing stability services, and covers the costs for other affordable rental housing and eviction prevention activities.

The federal funding will also bring $26.4 million for grants and housing vouchers for homelessness in rural areas. An additional $10 million will go to the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grants, which will be used for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles for the Jordan Downs site in Watts. Choice Neighborhoods Implementation provides support to neighborhoods related to health, education, and income, and invests in neighborhood improvement projects.
