I have a variety of interests so I’m going to deviate one last time before I get back to the follow up on my trip to the Presidential Inauguration. So, stay with me while I give you my opinion on Kobe Bryant and his leadership of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Remember last year when the Kobe Bryant led Lakers humiliated themselves against the Boston Celtics? We were told how much they have improved. Perhaps their physical game but has their mental game improved? We all know Kobe Bryant has skills but does he have the leadership to win a championship as the team leader. Kobe resented Shaq’s leadership when he was the Lakers center during their most recent championship run and he desperately wants to win one under his direction.

I’ve gone off the reservation a little bit but this time of year families, if they’re fortunate enough, are attending a variety of graduation events across high school and college campuses. Graduation season is upon us and I’m reflecting upon the graduation of my friend Jessica. Those of you who know my background know I went back to school in 1995 at age thirty-two. For those of you that don’t know my story then that’s a blog for another day. As always, feel free to let me know if there is an interest in a topic and I’ll address it sooner than later. Anyway, enough of me, let’s get back to Jessica. My first semester back at school I met Jessica at El Camino Community College. She was a sixteen-year old high school teenager and I was an older opinionated student. In this particular class I constantly challenged the instructor but I was not alone, there were two other older students in the class and we all became friends. However, there was Jessica the youngest student in the class and she gravitated toward us as older students. Somehow, Jessica and I became friends and now she has just graduated from U.C.L.A. with a medical degree and a master’s in business administration. Along the way she earned her bachelors and a masters in public health. So, now she is a doctor. Read the rest of this entry »

I know there was an expectation that my next blog was going to be a follow up on my inaugural [sic, inauguration] trip. However, the President’s trip abroad was too compelling to pass up. Therefore, I’ll postpone my thoughts about General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union untill a later date because I have much to say on this subject.
Yesterday President Obama spoke in Egypt and mentioned the death of countless Jews during World War II. Later today the President will visit the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Years ago I conducted cultural exchanges between Los Angeles and Berlin, Germany. In 1994, while in Germany I was part of a group of Americans who visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp just north of Berlin in a town called Oranienburg. Actually, both Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen were death camps. One might say they are still death camps. Of course, executions no longer take place but, as the President will see, the presence of evil and death still exist.

My first interview took place in Phoenix, Arizona with Freeda and Rodney Kendall. As you remember they were the homeless couple I met. Freeda and I exchanged phone numbers and I promised to visit them when I returned from the inauguration. However, my return trip was so fast-paced and in my urgency to return to work I was unable to visit them so I left a message with Freeda stating my inability to visit them. In a future blog I’ll describe my post-inauguration activities.
In Phoenix Freeda participated in a program called the Once a Month Church where hundreds of homeless people meet every month to eat, network, get encouragement, get information, get clothing and learn life skills. Read the rest of this entry »

I know I’m a little late but better late than never. I have returned, two months later than I anticipated but I went under the doctors’ knife. No, I’m not going to discuss my health condition but suffice it to say I haven’t felt like doing much other than pain avoidance and plenty of doctor ordered rest.
Well, I’m back and I feel like digging into many things but first we’ll finish our old business and I’ll compare this trip with my 2004 cross-country trip. Read the rest of this entry »
