Meet the Grunion at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will be offering a “Meet the Grunion” program, starting at 8 p.m. June 14.
The program will be offered again June 28, July 13 and 28.
The Aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and a film on grunion begins at 9 p.m. in the John M. Olguin Auditorium.  Prior to the predicted run, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion.  The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors, students, and children.  Warm clothing is recommended.
Grunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches.  They are found from central California through Baja California, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to observe the fish.
At times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate.  The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs.  Then both males and females catch the next wave back out to sea.  The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch, and carries them back out to sea.

Catalina Above, Below

The 93-foot fishing vessel, First String, will depart Los Angeles Harbor Sportsfishing Landing in Ports O’ Call Village in San Pedro.
Catalina Above And Below is one of the aquarium’s most popular boat trips. Not only will you have a first-hand experience to see many of the methods used by the staff to capture its marine specimens, but also to learn about these creatures.
Prior to arrival to the Island, everyone will assist in pulling up special traps in effort to capture the rarely seen hagfish (slime eel) for close-up inspection.  After reaching the island, fish traps will be retrieved and the aquarium divers will hand-collect an assortment of reef specimens which all will be displayed and discussed.
Later, all participants will go ashore at the Isthmus to explore the part of the island seldom visited by tourists.
After the island visit there will be a controlled shark baiting to lure these majestic and misunderstood animals to the surface for close-up observation.
Throughout the trip, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium marine biologists, aquarists, naturalists and other staff will be on board giving talks and assisting with identification of all sea life collected or observed.
Cost for the trip is $95 per person ($85 Friends member).
