The Jerk Who Allegedly Stole Christmas

LOMITA — The Lomita Sheriff’s Department arrested 42-year-old Michael Wieczorek, Dec. 20, on suspicion of theft.

Detectives found that the home of Wieczorek, a San Pedro resident, was full of stolen merchandise, looted mail, identity theft tools and computers. Officials said the suspect would steal packages from people’s porches, opened them, then re-wrap them and re-gift them.

The investigation was opened after a report that someone stole a package from a Rancho Palos Verdes home. After the suspect was identified, deputies went to his home and found stolen goods from communities throughout Southern California, including Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance, Palos Verdes Estates, San Pedro, Los Angeles, Carson, Long Beach, Lakewood, Redlands, Temecula, Auburn, Murrieta and even Bellevue, Wash.

Deputies also found jewelry, vacuum cleaners, toys, cookware, clothes, drugs, credit cards and identification cards that did not belong to the suspect.

Wieczorek was released from custody after posting $20,000 bail. The suspect is scheduled to appear at court Jan. 10 in Torrance.

POLA Chooses Ports O’Call Developer

SAN PEDRO — The Port of Los Angeles announced, Dec. 20, that the LA Waterfront Alliance is its preferred developer for the redevelopment of Ports O’Call Village in San Pedro.

The LA Waterfront Alliance is a partnership between the Ratkovich Co. and Jericho Development Co.

The Ratkovich Co.’s development projects include the Hercules Campus project at Playa Vista, the Alhambra project in Alhambra and the Terminal Annex project at Union Station.

The redevelopment plans for Ports O’Call include a gateway at 13th Street to link the Waterfront with the rest of the San Pedro community. The plans also include restaurants, retail stores, a hotel, a conference center and the relocation of POLA’s administrative offices.

The idea would be to include recommendations from the Urban Land Institute study on Ports O’Call that maintains the San Pedro Fish Market, which is a characteristic element for the community.

The suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene, but a 15-year-old Lakewood resident was apprehended after he dropped a backpack and attempted to hide behind a tree.

Further investigation showed that four unlocked vehicles had been burglarized. The suspect’s backpack was full of stolen property.

Belmont Shore Fire Station Loses Engine

LONG BEACH  — The Long Beach Fire Department released a memo, Dec. 17, detailing the elimination of one of its engine due in the Fiscal Year 2013 budget, effective Jan. 2, 2013.

The fire department also decided to relocate the paramedic rescue ambulance from Station 14 to Station 8. The department also will no longer operate a four-personnel truck and two-staff fire engine.  Instead it will operate a fire truck from Station 17 and a fire engine out of Station 14, staffed daily with four people.

The reductions and relocations were made to avoid closing any fire station.
