Death in Custody
LONG BEACH — A man died in the custody of the Long Beach Police Department May 25.
The LBPD arrested the man after private security detained him at an industrial property on the 6200 block of Paramount Avenue.
The man allegedly broke into the property and was going into employee vehicles.
Police say that a security guard was called and after arriving, the suspect attempted to take the security guards vehicle from him.  A struggle ensued and the suspect fled on foot with the security guard following him.  During the incident, the security guard company called the Long Beach Police and requested assistance.
The security guards caught the suspect as he was attempting to jump a fence, and held him until Long Beach Police arrived and handcuffed him.  Shortly after, the man went into medical distress. Paramedics took the man to a local hospital but the man ended up dying.
At this time, his identity is unknown, but he appears to be in his 20s or 30s.
Homicide detectives responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation, which is standard procedure when an individual dies while in police custody.  The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office will also be conducting an independent investigation into the suspect’s cause of death.
Anyone with information regarding this incident should call (562) 570-7244

Long Beach Port Executive Director to Resign
Port of Long Beach Executive Director J. Christopher Lytle, since November 2011, said May 23, that he will resign to take the top post at the Port of Oakland. Lytle will remain at Long Beach until mid-July, and is expected to begin his new job in Oakland shortly thereafter.
Lytle, who first joined the Port of Long Beach in 2006 as a managing director, was promoted to Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer in 2008. He became the port’s top executive after the retirement of longtime executive director Richard D. Steinke.
Before Lytle’s departure, the Board of Harbor Commissioners will name an interim executive director.
Lytle has served at the top echelons of the port throughout its transformation into “The Green Port,” as it carried out its commitment to reduce environmental impacts of its operations. The Port of Long Beach is the nation’s second busiest container seaport.

Human Trafficking Arrests

The Long Beach Police Department arrested Lebrette Winn and Eric Avery, May 15, on suspicion of human trafficking.
The investigation involved two victims but detectives believe that there are more.
At about 11:55 p.m., May 15, the Hawthorne Police Department contacted the Long Beach Police regarding two woman who had escaped from a man who had kidnapped them in Long Beach and were forcing them to perform acts of prostitution.  The two victims had escaped their captor while in Culver City, and were able to make their way to Hawthorne where they contacted authorities.
The Long Beach Police Department immediately initiated an in-depth, multi-day investigation, learning that one of the two women had been held against her will for at least four months.  During the time they were held, they were forced to perform acts of prostitution throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and one of them was sexually assaulted by one of the suspects.  The investigation also led Long Beach Police to the City of Inglewood, where they located a 16-year-old female victim who was found at a motel.
Through their investigation, detectives were able to identify two suspects who were subsequently taken into custody after a traffic stop on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at approximately 7:00 p.m. in the area of Pine Avenue and Bay Street in Long Beach.  They are identified as 22-year-old Lebrette Winn, and 24-year-old Eric Avery, both Long Beach residents.
On May 20, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed nine felony counts against Winn, and two felony counts against Defendant Avery.  Those charges include human trafficking, pimping, pandering, mayhem, kidnapping, and other charges relating to sexually based offenses. They will appear for their preliminary hearing on June 4, 2013, in Long Beach Superior Court.
Detectives believe that other victims may exist and are hoping they will come forward.
The results of this investigation can be attributed to the joint efforts between detectives in the Vice Investigations Detail, the Sex Crimes Detail, the Juvenile Investigations Section, and patrol officers, followed by several days of relentless follow-up investigation.  The
Anyone who is or has been a victim of human trafficking is urged to come forward by calling (562) 570-7219
