LBPD Crime Stats
LONG BEACH — Long Beach achieved a 40-year low for violent crime, according to the final 2012 crime statistics that the Long Beach Police Department released Jan. 25.
The overall total of citywide violent crimes decreased by 5.3 percent this past year. The violent crime rate in Long Beach is the lowest it has been since 1972.
Murders in 2012 was the only violent crime category to increase, but was 14.3 percent below the 5-year average.  In 2011 the city saw the lowest number of murders in recorded history at 26*.  Of the 30 murders in 2012, 14 were investigated as gang related.
In the property crime category, Long Beach experienced an increase of 10 percent, most notably due to residential and garage burglaries, and vehicle thefts. Residential burglaries were up 19 percent, while garage burglaries increased by 46.2 percent. Auto theft incidents increased by 19.1 percent, with 421 more incidents being reported in 2012 than in 2011. *The official LBPD 3010 Reported Crime Statistics information that was reported to the FBI reflected 25 total murders for 2011. The actual total of murders for 2011 was 26 after the LA County Coroner’s Office ruled a 2011 undetermined death as a murder in 2012.

POLAHS Senior Awarded Full Tuition Scholarship
SAN PEDRO — The Posse Foundation awarded Port of Los Angeles High School senior Jordan Bonner a full tuition scholarship to Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.
Founded in 1989, Posse identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes.
Jordan completed nine Advanced Placement and Honors courses; maintained the principal’s honor roll; played varsity basketball for four years; received the Future Leader of San Pedro Award; and is the Associated Student Body senior class President. Jordan plans on majoring in business or engineering at Bucknell.
Remarkably, Jordan’s older brother Joshua received the Posse scholarship this past year.

CBP Seizes About $900K of Tablets
LOS ANGELES U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and import specialists assigned to the Los Angeles and Long Beach seaport complex seized 5,101 tablet computers containing electrical adapters with counterfeit ETL Listed Mark (ETL) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety markings.
Officers discovered the infringing merchandise in a shipment arriving from China. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $898,328 with a domestic value of $691,745. Seized were 4,705 9-inch and 396 7-inch tablets with chargers.
ETL and UL are independent product safety certification organizations that rigorously test and evaluate products for potential risk of fire, shock, and/or personal injury. Products are not certified until they meet established standards.
Products bearing counterfeit ETL and UL certification marks have not undergone such a testing and certification process, and can present potential safety hazards to the consumer. If forfeited, seized tablets and adapters will likely be destroyed.
In fiscal year 2011, electrical articles presenting potential safety or security risks, with an estimated domestic value of $10.2 million, represented 17 percent of all commodities seized by Customs and Border Protection nationwide.

10 Cited During Undercover Operations
The Long Beach Police Department’s Vice Investigations Section, in cooperation with investigators from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, conducted two undercover operations, Jan. 22, throughout the City of Long Beach.
The “Minor Decoy” operation focused on employees and the “Shoulder Tap” operation focused on customers of ABC licensed businesses such as liquor or convenience stores. Minors under the age of 21, under the supervision of the LBPD, either approached employees and attempted to purchase alcohol or approached customers outside the venue and requested alcohol be purchased on their behalf.
Employees, who allowed the minor to purchase alcohol, and customers, who purchased alcohol for minors, were identified and subsequently issued misdemeanor citations for unlawfully furnishing alcohol to a minor. The businesses were unaware that an undercover operation was underway.
During the course of the “Minor Decoy” operation, 20 establishments were visited resulting in seven citations being issued to employees for selling alcohol to a minor.
The seven misdemeanor citations were issued in the following areas to:

  • Royal Market, 810 E Anaheim
  • A & Cherry Market, 1834 E Anaheim
  • Mekong Market, 2230 E Anaheim
  • Para Liquor, 5660 Paramount Blvd
  • Elbys Liquor, 2337 E South St
  • Eddies Jr Market, 2943 Santa Fe
  • Villa Market, 2990 Santa Fe

During the “Shoulder Tap” operation, 14 customers were contacted outside an establishment in the 400 block of Long Beach Blvd resulting in three citations being issued to customers for furnishing alcohol to a minor.
These operations are conducted with the community’s safety in mind.  The L.B.P.D. will continue to enforce ABC laws at all establishments throughout the city and wants to remind everyone that there are consequences for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Anyone wishing to report illegal behavior relating to the unlawful sale of alcohol should contact the Vice Investigations Section at (562) 570-7219 or visit www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

Hahn Assigned to Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Jan. 23, Rep. Janice Hahn, CA-44, was selected to sit on three subcommittees of the prominent House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee: the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit and the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment.
“One of my central priorities is to ensure once and for all what is collected for the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund is spent on its true purpose for ports,” Hahn said.
