Oct. 24
Brass Rubbing Medieval Art Center at St. Luke’s
From Oct. 24 through Nov. 17 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach will be exhibiting Medieval art.

Those years continue to spark endless intrigue: think of the recent unearthing of what may be the bones of King Richard III from what was a friary in Leicester, England, and is now a parking lot.

There’s no bones at the Brass Rubbing Medieval Art Center at St. Luke’s, a half-a-world and centuries removed. But for 26 years, visitors have been given the tools to dig into that history to conjure up, as art, images of kings and consorts, knights, lords and ladies.

Fall is just the season for such poking around; not with shovels, but with gold, silver and copper wax “crayons.” When vigorously raked over paper placed over the memorials, the sticks release their metallic content to produce bright shiny images that can grace the walls of the modern abode. Cost is $6.50 per person.

Explore Palos Verdes Peninsula Intimately
The local Sierra Club chapter presents an interactive slide show lecture with focus on little known aspects of the fauna and flora of Palos Verdes, from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24, in the Community room of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Library.

The peninsula hosts various nature preserves, including the largest open space between the Santa Monica Mountains and southern Orange County. Its birds and most of its flora, are reasonably well studied, but some reptiles and amphibians, and especially most insects, arachnids and gastropods are little known.

The presenter, Emile Fiesler, will show intimate close-ups of these animals, and a few plants, and how they relate to each other. Emile is president of Bioveyda, a Torrance-based company, performing minimal-impact biological surveys and inventories, biodiversity assessments, and related taxonomic services.  His professional focus is on arthropods, gastropods, reptiles, amphibians, and vascular plants.  This focus is reflected in his colorful presentation.

Father Serra brings the audience into his time making them part of the event. This is a fun and interactive activity suited for all ages.  For children studying California history, this is a great way to make history come alive.

The information is part of the Fourth California standards of teaching emphasizing fourth grade early California history with a focus on missions and ranchos. The presentation brings to light Father Serra’s journey to the new world, his journey to cross Mexico and the way he came to California after serving 20 years in Mexico.

Father Junipero Serra was part of the Portola expedition into Spanish controlled California. He traveled from San Diego to Northern California establishing missions, converting the native population to Christianity and setting the trend for life in California that in some ways continues to this day.

His personal stories and friendships with the Missionaries, Soldiers and the Native peoples are all brought to light with the audience brought along on his journey.

Father Serra introduces the audience to the process of Adobe brick making, the importance of water and the different foods that were prepared and eaten at the Mission.
