Congress in Your Community
Community members are invited to the 8th District Community to Congress in Your Community, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27, at the 8th Council District Field Office in Long Beach.
Once per month, staff and caseworkers from Rep. Janice Hahn, 44th District, come into the community to meet with constituents. These one-on-one discussions cover topics of choice, to including assistance with problems with a federal agency, such as the Veterans Affairs, Social Security, IRS, Immigration issues, HUD, etc.
Another meeting is scheduled for April 24.

Mayan Linguist Discusses Mayan Calendar
Mayan linguist and epigraphist José Obispo Rodríguez Guaján will speak during the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished Speakers Series, from 11:30 to 1 p.m. March 28, at the Loker Student Union Ballroom at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
Guaján’s talk is titled “Mayan Mathematics and its relation to the Mayan Calendar.”
The author of many books on the Kaqchikel Mayan language and on Mayan mathematics and hieroglyphs, Guaján (who also goes by the name Pakal B’alam Rodríguez Guaján) recently published a revised version of  “Popol Vuh,” the original creation stories of the Maya, as well as a book that reconstructs the counting systems of Kaqchikel Maya. As an epigraphist, he recently designed with hieroglyphic Maya writing a Stella that was installed in the archaeological sites of Iximche and Mexico Viejo ‘Old Mexico’ in commemoration of the 13 Baktun of the Mayan calendar.
He has taught at the University of Kansas in the Department of Linguistics and the Latin American Studies Center, is a member of the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala (Academy of Mayan Languages in Guatemala), and is the founder and director of the Jumatizim Jay museum in Tecpán, Guatemala.

Food Drive
San Pedro Mental Health is conducting a collaborative food drive with Toberman Neighborhood Center through March 29.

LB Council Votes on Surplus Dollars
The Long Beach City Council will vote, April 2, on appropriating the $5.4 million surplus dollars from fiscal years 2011 and 2012 as recommended by the Budget Oversight Committee.
The recommendations is use $1.6 million for residential street repaving, $1 million sidewalk repair, $1 million for slurry sealing and $1.8 million for council office infrastructure funds targeted at parks, recreation and marine maintenance projects.

LB Council to Vote on Mortuary Moratorium
The Long Beach City Council is scheduled to vote, at its regular meeting 5 p.m. April 2, on whether or not to declare an ordinance temporarily limiting mortuaries, funeral homes and crematoriums in the city.

PV Ride for Habitat for Humanity
Register or sponsor a rider at this year’s Palos Verdes Ride for Habitat for Humanity, which takes place April 6, starting and ending at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes.
There are three course options: 17, 35 and 50 miles. Riders will experience breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and return to a celebration featuring food, live jazz, prizes and more.

Urban Ocean Poetry Contest
The Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting its 4th Annual Poetry Contest as part of the Urban Ocean Festival.
Poems must be submitted addressing the theme of humans and nature coexisting with an urban ocean.
There is a maximum of 300 words. One entry per person is allowed.
Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. April 8.

Port Searches for Clean Air Innovators
Nominations now are open for the 6th annual San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan Awards.
The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach recognize, through these awards the air pollution-fighting effort of port-related business in the area.
The deadline for nominations is 4 p.m. April 26. Nominations can be completed and submitted at www.cleanairactionplan.org/about/caapnomination.asp.
Nominations will be accepted for port tenants operating at either port as well as other operators serving the ports – such as shipping lines, trucking companies and rail operators – who demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing air pollution in 2012.
Only port tenants and other operators that serve one or both of the local ports are eligible for this program; technology vendors are not eligible. Self-nominations also will be accepted.
Awards will be offered in four categories:

             Air Quality Improvement Leadership at the Corporate Level

             Innovative Air Quality Improvement Technologies

             Innovative Operations that Improve Air Quality

             Significant Early Action to Reduce Air Pollutant Emissions

Award recipients will be honored at an award ceremony July 18.

Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council Seeks Board Member
The Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council is looking for a community member to fill one vacant at-large board member position (expiring June 2014).
The purpose of the CSPNC is to function in an advisory capacity to various Los Angeles city departments and elected officials through meetings and various forms of communications, as well as promoting a strong sense of neighborhood by bringing stakeholders together to work on activities that enhance the livelihood of the community.
Any stakeholder at least 14 years of age is eligible to run for the office of board Member. The term of service is from October 2012 through June 2014. A “stakeholder” is defined as those who live, work, or own property in the neighborhood and also to those who declare a stake in the neighborhood and affirm the factual basis for it.
The Council is bounded on the west commencing at the intersection of 18th Street and Leland Street, then northerly along the center line of Leland Street to 7th Street, then easterly on 7th Street to Meyler Street, then northerly on Meyler Street to 1st Street, then west on 1st Street to Bandini Street, the northerly along the center line of Bandini Street to Upland Avenue, then easterly on Upland Avenue to Meyler Street, then northerly on Meyler Street to Miraflores Avenue, then easterly on Miraflores Avenue to Pacific Avenue, then northerly on Pacific Avenue to a point where it intersects with the centerline of the Southwest Channel of Los Angeles Harbor, then easterly along the center line of the Southwest Channel to the point where it intersects with the Main Channel in the Turning Basin of the Port of Los Angeles, then southerly along the center line of the Main Channel to a point where it intersects with the center line of the San Pedro slip of the Port of Los Angeles, then northerly along the center line of 14th Street, then westerly along the center line of 14th Street to a point 100 feet west of Pacific Avenue, then southerly along a line 100 feet west of Pacific Avenue to 18th Street, then westerly along the center line of 18th Street to Leland Street.

SCE Alamitos Avenue Utility Undergrounding Project to Start

Southern California Edison and other utility companies will soon be starting work to underground all overhead utility lines along Alamitos Avenue between 7th Street and Pacific Coast Highway. Construction in the public right of way will start shortly and last about six to eight months.
There will be a community information session, at 5 p.m. March 28, at 5:00 pm at Ernest McBride Park’s Cal Rec Community Center, 1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.
Traffic controls will be in place to provide safety for motorists and workers. At least one lane in each direction will be open at all times, but there will be lane closures of specific blocks as work progresses. Traffic delays are expected. Parking and access to some driveways may be impacted during construction hours, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use alternative routes when possible.
After the construction in the public right of way is completed, utility connections will be made to all the properties in the area, and then the utility wires will be placed underground.
