Beyond This Moment
The Long Beach Jordan High School, WRAP Program is please to announce the Youth Empowerment Conference “Beyond This Moment”, starting at 9 a.m. April 13, at Jordan High School.
This high school-led event will be transported to students from all over the greater Long Beach area to discuss the problems that plague our teens. From bullying to managing anger, this conference was created to tackle the issues that teens are faced with every day so that they can move beyond the moment to one of self-empowerment.
Following the event, there will be a student Peace Rally on Atlantic Avenue to support ending violence in Long Beach.

The Long Beach City Council will consider zoning changed with regard to the city’s emergency shelters, during its April 16 regular meeting at 5 p.m. in City Hall.

Political Contributions
The Long Beach City Council will consider potential ordinances to ban political contributions from contractors and those having business before the council, require elected officials to disclose non-public communications about public business and require council members to disclose any communication with lobbyists at during meetings.

April 18
LBACS Fundraiser
The Long Beach Animal Care Services is hosting a fundraiser, from 4 to 10 p.m. April 18, at Veggie Grill Restaurant.
Pets Always Worth Saving citizen support group is organizing the event for Long Beach Animal Care Services.
Diners who present an event flier or mention Long Beach Animal Care Services on the evening of April 18 will have a generous 50 percent of their food and beverage purchase donated to Long Beach ACS. The flier is available for download at www.lbparks.org and www.longbeach.gov/acs.
The goal of Long Beach Animal Care Services is to make Long Beach the safest large city in California for people and animals through the promotion of responsible pet ownership and recreation.

Come join hundreds of your motorcyclist (and scooter) friends at the Los Angeles Ride for Kids®, starting at 8 a.m. May 5, at American Honda Motor Co. in Torrance.
The Ride for Kids ® program supports the efforts of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation to find the cause of and cure for childhood brain tumors.
Registration opens at 8 am. There is $40 minimum donation.

Breath Of Life Awards 2013
BREATHE LA will honor The Boeing Co. with the Breath of Life Award, at its 2013 Breath of Life Awards reception, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 7, at the Long Beach Convention Center.
BNSF Railway will receive the Innovation Award.
Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom will receive the Civic Leader Award.
Los Angeles/Orange County Building & Construction Trades Council will receive the Community Impact Award.
The Boeing Co. is recognized as a trendsetter in protecting the environment and demonstrating good global corporate citizenship. For three years in a row, Boeing has been officially recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project as one of the world’s leading companies for taking actions to improve environmental performance.  Since 2002, on a revenue-adjusted basis, Boeing has reduced CO2 emissions by 31 percent, energy consumption by 32 percent, water consumption by 43 percent and hazardous waste generation by 38 percent.
Lt. Gov.Gavin Newsom is commended for marshaling support for AB32 and ongoing groundbreaking environmental policies to clean our air and lead American efforts to reduce climate change. He is prioritizing research and education toward energy and environmental innovation through his positions on both Boards of Regents.
BNSF Railway is recognized as the most aggressive rail company to implement greening methods, garnering approval from Longshoremen and other community groups.  BNSF has invested millions towards reducing diesel emissions, electrification of rail yards, converting equipment to utilize alternative fuel technology.
Los Angeles/Orange County Building & Construction Trades Council, recipient of the Community Impact Award, has been a leader in building our Southern California green economy.  It was awarded by Los Angeles County MTA the overarching contract to build all Long Range Transportation Plans for the Los Angeles County area utilizing the latest green building standards.  The council is active as a regional arm of the California Building & Construction Trades Council to promote alternative energy, including the establishment of California Unions for Reliable Energy.

San Pedro – Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Youth on Board video contest is the perfect opportunity for youth in Southern California to have their voices heard.
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s video contest is for middle school and high school students in Southern California. Participants are tasked with creating a video that is 60 seconds or less without dialogue, featuring their inspiring impressions of Southern California’s ocean. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and how effectively the message conveys the inspirational nature of the ocean. One grand prize trophy will be awarded to the winning entry (group or individual) and gift certificates to the aquariums gift shop will be given to individual winners.
They will be awarded at the Aquarium on World Ocean Day Saturday, June 8.

Long Beach AIDS Ride
Registration for the Long Beach AIDS Ride now is open.
Riders can choose between a 40- or 75-mile route that winds down the coast.
