St. Paddy’s Weekend
By Gretchen Williams Tostrup

A strong brogue at the bar declared to his fellow “Well, you never have been to Ireland, then, have you?” and called for another round of Harp beer on tap for he and his friend. Keegan’s Pub & Grill is a wee piece of the Emerald Isle set in old town Torrance. “Saint Paddy’s Friday” before the day will bring bagpipers to the Pub, celebrating happy hour, and Club Shamrock’s traditional ladies’ night.
Keegan’s is its usual happening spot on Saturday night, with live bands all night. Saint Patrick’s Day, on March 17, promises day-long music, with several Irish bands and roving pipers keeping things lively from 11a.m. on. In the evening, a DJ will continue the festivities. Traditional Irish savories like Shepard’s Pie, corned beef and cabbage, and fish and chips will be served all day. The brew selection on tap is phenomenal, and includes traditional Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks, along with Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light, Sierra Nevada Crystal Wheat, Widmer Hefewiezen, Blue Moon, Stella Artois, New Castle and Samuel Adams. Choices in the bottle stretch to Boddingtons 1 pint can, Fat Tire 22 oz., Stella, Bass, and Blackthorn Cider, with Heineken, Corona, Tecate, Dos Equis Amber and Pacifico rounding out an international offering. The charming barkeep keeps the thirsty at bay with this embarrassment of riches.
Keegan’s sports an expansive brick patio alongside the pub, lovely for a bit of air during the serious party proceedings. This spot should be just the place for a refreshing pint on a balmy evening in summer too.
    Keegan’s Pub & Grill, 1434 Marcelina Ave., Torrance. (310) 328-3750.
Irish Car Bombs will be blasting on 6th Street over St. Paddy’s Weekend at the San Pedro Brewing Company. This incendiary libation is Bailey’s Irish Cream and Jameson’s Irish whiskey in a shot glass, plunged into half a pint of Guinness Stout. When the shouting is all over and the smoke clears, there will still be San Pedro Brewing’s excellent brews for consolation. “Best in Show” top dogs are Point Fermin Pale Ale, Harbor Hefeweisen and brewer branded Welke Bock. Equal opportunity reigns supreme as popular favorites Bruin Blonde Ale and Trojan Red Ale share accolades and a cross-town competition, and Shanghai Red Ale nods to its namesake with a deep and full bodied malty flavor.
For the sophisticated sipper, the cocktail menu offers Eat a Peach, with vodka, peach schnapps, peach nectar and a champagne float, or the South Bay, with orange vodka, Cointreau, a splash of orange juice and a Chambord float. The seductive Espresso Martini might be a marvelous nightcap, with vanilla vodka, Kahlua, Godiva Cappuccino Espresso, garnished with chocolate covered espresso coffee beans.
St. Paddy’s Weekend will boast D.J. Mike Varela on Friday night to kick Patrick’s fest into gear, and Saturday the 15th will feature the Hollywood Stones, a rocking tribute to Mick and his mates. On Sunday, March 16, lower 6th St. will resonate with traditional Irish music and on the day itself, the Brewing Company will ring with the bagpipes of Eire.
The San Pedro Brewing Company will be serving corned beef and cabbage all weekend, along with its regular excellent bill of fare. Beer battered fish and chips are crispy and authentic, and delicious with a cool brew. Santa Maria tri-tip steak is rubbed with a zingy spice combo and then fire grilled, juicy and full of flavor. Sunday night brings traditional prime ribs of beef, crusty outside and pink inside, served with intense horseradish sauce and all the trimmings; the meal includes Caesar salad and rich crème brûlée. Calamari Greek salad with pesto vinaigrette is interesting, filled with crunchy rings, Kalamata olives, capers, red onion sand cucumber on a bed of romaine, and sprinkled with crumbled feta cheese. Add seared Ahi tuna for a super salad from the sea. Beautiful fire grilled salmon on a bed of baby greens with avocado and tomato, dressed with toasted corn vinaigrette is appealing and satisfying. The swordfish sandwich on grilled sourdough with tartar sauce and lemon is fast becoming a San Pedro classic.
The S.P.B.C.’s “famous” Ruben sandwich is corned beef or smoked turkey on grilled corn rye, with slices of Swiss, 1000 island dressing and coleslaw. Grilled fresh veggie sandwich is fascinating and unique, with grilled red pepper, sweet onion, zucchini and yellow squash, topped with melted Jack cheese on toasted sourdough, with lettuce, tomato and pesto aioli sauce. The San Francisco patty melt borrows the northern California concept with a half pound burger on toasted sourdough with cheddar cheese, 1000 Island and grilled onions –messy to eat, but spectacular. Five burgers vie for the title of the best – the Ortega burger with melted Jack cheese, roasted chilies and Santa Fe Sauce should not be missed. Delight in the tortilla soup, generously garnished with avocado, cheese and chips. Enticing dishes and artisan brews, live music and lots of fun will honor the patron saint of Ireland at S.P.B.C. this weekend – if Saint Patrick knew about it, he’d be here!
