Arcade Gallery Offers Marymount New Home

The founding members of the San Pedro Arts and Academic Alliancehave offered The Arcade Gallery in San Pedro as a fixed venue for Marymount College students to showcase college work as students of Marymount’s Media Studies bachelor’s program. The Arcade Galley will host student work from a variety of artistic mediums. Gallery hours will be open to public.

“Our mission is based on a profound faith that investment in the arts and arts education is an investment in the wellbeing of the larger community and, at the same time, creates an economic vibrancy in the community,” said Peter Rothe, a tenant of The Arcade Building, where The Arcade Gallery is located. The college has made recent strides in its development in downtown San Pedro, when it announced the scheduled its August 2012 opening of its Marymount College’s Waterfront Campus in San Pedro, where it will offer an expanded Media Studies program at the Marylyn and Chuck Center for the Arts.

Additionally, the college leases rehearsal and performance venues from the Warner Grand Theatre and the Grand Annex.

“With this new partnership with Marymount College, the San Pedro Arts and Academic Alliance group continues its commitment to the downtown San Pedro’s historic core,” said patron Gary Larson.

Marymount College Palos Verdes is one of two Catholic, 4-year coeducational colleges in Los Angeles County with campuses along the picturesque coastline of Rancho Palos Verdes and in the San Pedro community.

Themes include the powerful influences of commerce and resource use, the geography of memories, and the boundaries of exclusion, belonging, and artistic legacy. Admission is free.

Sweet and Sour - It's a Thin Line

The oil industry exists within a duality. It pollutes the environment with the sights, sounds, and smells of an industrial reality. But, it also provides steady employment. Sweet and Sour - It's a Thin Line presents the effects of the oil industry and sulfur production on the landscape, and its impact on the people of the South Bay area. This exhibition will look through a microscope at situations that might be reflective of a macroscopic reality. The artist, Arnoldo Vargas, is a native of Wilmington. He earned his bachelor’s in fine arts from UCLA and graduated with an master’s in fine arts candidate in photography and new Media from CalArts. His work has been exhibited internationally.

Immigrant/Emigrant

Immigrant/Emigrant explores the creation of art from an "outsider" perspective. Whether excluded from the umbrella of traditional art-making due to choice of materials, subject matter, or venue, "outsider" art challenges individuals and communities to explore the boundaries of inclusion and exclusion so often experienced in diverse and immigrant communities. Curator Lara Bullock is a writer, contemporary art historian, and curator. She received her masters in art history, theory, and criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is writing a dissertation on contemporary street art.

Project Space: Hito

Project Space: Hito This exhibition assembles many bodies of work from the artist, tied to one location: The Port of Los Angeles. Rasmussen has pinpointed locations in San Pedro, The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach that have either greatly influenced her art, or are the exact sites of a project. Viewers are encouraged to visit these sites to seek out objects, or to recreate the views seen in her photographs for themselves. A growing online map of the artist's explorations is available at: http://g.co/maps/n64ey.
