In Search of the Belmont Shoplifter

A woman (shown below), who probably thought Black Friday specials were too outrages, was caught tape shoplifting at several stores, on Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach.

A Celebration of Life

Dec. 2

We Can Soar

The Committee to Commemorate the Centennial of the First Transcontinental Flight announced an essay contest for middle and high school students interested in local history, writing and aviation.

Students are encouraged to write an essay based on the history of the flight of the "Vin Fiz" and how the event contributed to the history of aviation in Long Beach.

High school participants in the "We Can Soar" essay contest will compete for a $500 scholarship, while middle school competitors could win a flight on a private plane. Second and third place winners in all age groups will get a tour of the Long Beach Airport and an airport "goody-bag."

Flight commemoration events throughout Long Beach will culminate with a dedication of a "Vin Fiz" replica and plaque on Dec. 10, at the Long Beach Arena. All entries must be received by Dec. 2nd.

Occupy San Pedro Fundraiser Dinner

If you support the global occupy movement, or want to learn more about it, attend the free Occupy San Pedro Fundraiser Dinner, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Harry Bridges Institute in San Pedro.

AOC7 Candlelight Vigil

Community members are invited to a candlelight vigil in memory of 32 people that were killed in Long Beach this year, from 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 3 in Long Beach. Some of the family members of the deceased will be present.

According to The Los Angeles Times 32 people have died as a result of homicide in Long Beach since Jan. 1, 2011, including 20 gunshot victims (http://projects.latimes.com/homicide/neighborhood/long-beach).

The vigil will begin at the corner of Walnut and 10th Street, where a procession will walk toward Cherry Avenue, to First Street at Bixby Park.

LA Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade Set

The 49th annual Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade, is set to take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 3, in the Port of Los Angeles Main Channel in San Pedro

With the theme of “Home for the Holidays,” officials and community leaders will take part in the parade as judges or passengers on about 50 parade boats. Vessels of all shapes and sizes will participate.

The parade starts in the East Basin near Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington and takes about 90 minutes to cover the entire parade route up the Port’s Main Channel. Spectators may view the procession from several points along the Port’s Main Channel, including the Banning’s Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water St., Wilmington; the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, 600 Sampson Way, San Pedro; Ports O’ Call Village, 1100 Nagoya Way, San Pedro; the Cruise Ship Promenade at Harbor Boulevard and Swinford Street, San Pedro; 22nd Street Landing, 141 W. 22nd Street, San Pedro; and Cabrillo Marina, 200 Whaler’s Walk, San Pedro. Dec. 12

Doug Zerby Death Anniversary Demonstration

A protest is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 12, in observance of first anniversary of the death of Doug Zerby, at the Long Beach Police Department.

Zerby was killed by two LBPD officers on Dec. 12, 2010. The officers said they believed a water nozzle held by Zerby was a handgun. Thinking he was about to shoot the object, the LBPD says the officers shot Zerby without letting their presence be known or warning.

On Nov. 3, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office concluded that the officers acted in self defense.

30-Minute Beach Clean Up

The 30-Minute Beach Cleanup can provide a 72-student (3 per seat) school bus ($320 value) to Long Beach-area schools, churches or other student organizations to come to the clean-ups on Dec. 17.
