Gallery 478 presents TIMEKEEPER+9, the photography of Anthony Friedkin. The exhibition will open First Thursday, December 1, and an Artist’s Reception will be held Saturday, December 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.

This exhibition revisits many images from 2003’s monograph TIMEKEEPER, a retrospective of photographs made over a period of more than thirty-five years and selected by the artist to represent his own view of his life’s work. TIMEKEEPER+9 includes key works produced in the years since its publication.

Anthony Friedkin’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Curated by Arnée and Ray Carofano, TIMEKEEPER+9 runs through February 23, 2012. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 11 AM – 5 PM and by appointment.

Artist Joy Gonzalez

Joy Gonzalez, who paints San Pedro and Palos Verdes scenes in an impressionistic realistic manner, is exhibiting her work through Nov. 30, at The Corner Store in San Pedro.

She conveys her deep appreciation of the natural world and her great love of the outdoors in beautiful landscapes painted in plain air. Her goal in painting outdoors is to capture the ever-changing light and deepening shadows of nature. Her studio work builds on the knowledge of nature's colors learned from observing and painting outdoors.

The Corner Store supports the arts and does NOT take a commission from the artists thus lowering the price of the painting.

Reflections on the Harbor

Angels Gate Cultural Center presents Reflections on the Harbor: Our Stories and Memories, through Jan. 6, 2012, in San Pedro.

Within the following year, the 3-gallery spaces will explore the South Bay/Harbor region from a topographical, cultural and historical perspective. Throughout the galleries there is room for visitors to reflect and share their thoughts with others.

The Main gallery will feature Sunken City, new work by John Trevino. Originally from Long Beach, Trevino photographs South Bay residents underwater in various locations off the coast of Palos Verdes. By photographing the residents fully dressed, in familiar, yet unexpected environments, Trevino explores notions of community, identity and place. The show is Trevino's first solo photography show.

Tamara Mason, a Long Beach based artist, was inspired by the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum in Wilmington to create a site specific work for the Project Space gallery. Entitled “Blockade,” the piece layers historic and contemporary images of the site to create textures thus giving the viewer a sense of vastness and intimacy.

People move to new places for a variety of reasons. To better understand what makes living in the South Bay/Harbor region special, Angels Gate Community Gallery features more than 200 images in the exhibition entitled “My 5" x 5" Picture “of various places submitted by Toberman Neighborhood Center, Sisters of the Poor, Harbor Adult School, Studio Artists and Holy Trinity students. All visitors to Angels Gate are encouraged to bring in 5 x 5 inch images to display in our Community Gallery.

In addition to the exhibitions, Angels Gate will offer a range of programming that encourages community participation through storytelling, workshops, dance, music and theatre. Underpinning all programming is a desire to provide a platform for local residents, across generations and racial and religious ideologies, to engage each other by sharing memories and hopes for the region. Realizing that each resident holds a unique part of the region’s story, Angels Gate Cultural Center has partnered with a number of organizations in the hope that the campus be a nexus for discussions about the region’s remarkable past as well as its promising future.
