SoundWalk 2011
Experience the sound art event "SoundWalk 2011,” a one-night event of sound installations by more than 35 local and international sound artists, from 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 1, in an area encompassed by 4th and 1st streets, and Linden and Elm avenues in Long Beach.
The event includes a wide range of work that will integrate visual, performance and aural elements such as sculptures, environments and installations, —both interactive and passive. This year's event will explore the concept of connectivity. Admission is free.

Call for Artists: Dia de los Muertos 2011
The Museum Of Latin American Art’s is hosting its annual Ofrenda/Altar Competition, a juried display at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California.
A limited number of participants will be selected to compete.
Ofrendas will be displayed during MOLAA’s annual Dia de los Muertos Festival, from 12 to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 in Long Beach.
Contemporary interpretations as well as traditional ofrendas are acceptable.
First place will receive a cash prize of $250, second place $100 and third place $50. All winners will receive MOLAA gift bags and will be featured on MOLAA’s facebook page.
Participants must submit a:
- Sketch of their proposed ofrenda
- Descriptive paragraph of their final project
Selected participants are required to install their ofrendas from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Oct. 16, at the museum.
All work must be original and not submitted to prior Altar Competitions at the Museum of Latin American Art. Entries must be submitted via fax, e-mail or in person during regular museum business hours. Entry form is attached as a PDF. There is no fee to participate. Deadline is at 5 p.m. Oct. 2.
Contest rules:
- pen to individuals or teams who complete and submit a proposal packet by the deadline.
- Altars can be tabletop installations but must not exceed 6 cubic feet in height
- Altars must be free-standing
- Organic materials (plants, food offerings) are acceptable
- Battery operated candles are required. No open flames will be allowed.

Artful Days
The Torrance Cultural Services Division presents Artful Days: Manet? Monet? What’s the Difference?, from 12 to 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at the George Nakano Theatre in Torrance.
Take an in-depth look at Mane and his new style of Realism that shocked the Paris art scene and paved the way for Monet and the other Impressionists to create their unique application of dappled color.

Thru MY Eyes Art Exhibit
Thru MY Eyes’ opening exhibit reception takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 6, at fINdings Art Center in San Pedro.
The opening will take place in conjunction with Downtown San Pedro First Thursday Artwalk. The group exhibit will feature 10 artists and will have residency for the month of October.

Arts & Services for Disabled
Support the disabled community, from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7, at the open house of Arts & Services for Disabled, a Long Beach nonprofit that serves people with developmental disabilities.
The agency serves people with autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down sydrome, Rett’s syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, Alzheimers and other mental illness, emotional disturbances and psychological disorders.
The open house will highlight the opening of the new ART Center and George Deneff Gallery, featuring the Then and Now exhibit, plus a live online auction of a unique Remo frame drum autographed by Ringo Starr, art market sales and a drum circle.
