Civil War on the Home Front

In recognition of the Civil War sesquicentennial, the 150th year since the start of the American Civil War, the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum is presenting, “Civil War on the Home Front, September 1861,” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 and 25, in Wilmington. The event will focus on how the Civil War affected those left at home, particularly children and women. Admission is free.

Day of the Drum and Jazz Festivals

Be part of the 30th annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Watts Towers Art Center in Los Angeles. Come back, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 24 for the Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival. The events will include music, guided tours, narratives and art.

Cultural Festival

Explore Latin American cultures while learning about the ocean, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24 and 25 at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach’s 10th annual Baja Splash Cultural Festival. Visitors can witness ancient Aztec drumming and dance, mariachi music and folk dances from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Cuba, Dominican Republic and more.

Raising Whales

Hollywood to Dollywood

On the fumes of a dream, twin brothers Gary and Larry Lane have written a script with a plum roll for their idols, Dolly Parton. Having had no luck getting the screenplay into her hands, they embark on a cross-country journey to personally deliver it to her. They set off from Dolly's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame heading east for Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Hollywood to Dollywood is a documentary of chasing dreams down the road of life. The film starts 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Becoming Chaz

Artful Thinking’s Out at the Movies presents film screening of Becoming Chaz, at 9 p.m., at the Art Theatre of Long Beach to raise funds for HIV/AIDS and breast cancer organizations. Becoming Chaz is the story of Chaz Bono's gender transition. Born Chastity, the only child of the legendary musical team Sonny and Cher, Chaz grew up feeling uncomfortable in the spotlight, struggling to live inside a body that he knew wasn't truly his. Deciding there was no choice but to undergo sex reassignment surgery, Chaz and his girlfriend Jennifer decided to document his personal transformation. Tickets are $11.
