Long Beach Water Department Coastal Cleanup
Come one, come all to the Statewide Coastal Cleanup Day, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Sept. 17, starting at Bluff Park in Long Beach.
The Long Beach Water Department will provide bags and gloves; you provide the
manpower. The event will conclude with food music and games for children.

Fresh, Easy and New Neighbor
Two new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood are scheduled to open at Sept. 14 in Long
Beach.
One store is scheduled to open near Long Beach Boulevard and 5th Street. The other
store is scheduled to open near Atlantic and 33rd avenues.
Long Beach Free Store
The Catalyst Network of Communities recently opened the Long Beach Free Store,
where community members can everything from housewares to books at no cost.
Free Store shoppers are encouraged to bring three to five small-to-medium sized
items to donate. Volunteers can even earn time-banking hours through Catalyst’s
partnership with the Long Beach Time Exchange. Business sponsors are welcome to
contribute their support in exchange for promotion through the Catalyst Network.

LBPD Offers A.W.A.R.E. Pilot Program
The Long Beach Police Department is looking for individuals to be involved in
the educational pilot program, Alert Well-prepared And Ready for Emergencies, for
community members who are interested in emergency preparedness and response.
The LBPD and Long Beach Fire Department will be presenting information
regarding what steps people can take to better prepare themselves in the event of an
emergency or disaster, and providing networking information and opportunities to
become more involved in the emergency response community.
Session information for the Wrigley area will be available, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept.
7, at Veteran’s Park Community Room.

Nominate a Neighbor for an Award
Participate in the 5th annual Good Neighbor Festival, from 10 to 3 p.m. Sept. 4 at
Good Neighbor Park in Long Beach.
September is National Good Neighbor Month and an excellent way to bring
Long Beach’s 5th District neighbors together to celebrate the work of neighborhood
organizations, community groups, and to learn more about the businesses and city
services that make our area a great place to live and to work.

San Pedro Dem Club Candidate Forum
Community members are invited to participate in a candidate forum for the 15th Los
Angeles City Council District, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Croatian American Club in
San Pedro.
This is not a debate. Each candidate will make an opening statement, take questions
and make a closing statement. Each candidate will pay a $50 fee to cover the cost of the
room and marketing.

Taking Applications for Vacant Board Seat
The Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council is seeking to fill one vacant board
seat for the term ending June 30, 2012. Candidates must live or own property in Census
Tract 2970, which is roughly the area bounded by 8th Street, Leland Street, 19th Street
and the Western Los Angeles City boundary.

Hahn Announces Toll-Free Number for D.C. Office
Congresswoman Janice Hahn recently announced that her Washington, D.C. office would
now be accessible via a toll-free phone number.
The new number is (855) 328-7332 and rings directly to the Washington, D.C.
office at no cost to land-line phones within the 36th Congressional District. The
Wilmington office phone number will remain (310) 548-8282 and is available to assist
persons needing assistance with any federal agency. Constituents may also contact

LBAPN fundraiser
The Long Beach Area Peace Network invites interested community members to
join them in honoring Long Beach area residents who have worked to achieve peace and
justice in our city, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Bixby Village Clubhouse in Long
Beach.
The event will feature music by Long Beach Unplugged and the Peace Choir,
appetizers, wine and soft drinks. A donation of $15 is suggested
donation is $15.
Honorees include:
Phyllis Solomon, a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for her devotion to the cause of
peace and justice. Now a leader in Leisure World’s Senior Citizens for
Peace, Solomon, who is 91 years old, was a founder of Long Beach Area Citizens
Involved and actively contributed to the Long Beach community for many years.
Sharon Cottrell, as "Peacemaker of the Year" for her ongoing work in Long
Beach and surrounding areas. Cottrell was a teamster, involved in numerous political
campaigns, an activist in LBACI and a founder of LBAPN. She has worked to ensure
fairness by the Long Beach Police Department as well as worked for workplace fairness
for all.
Tonia Reyes Uranga, "Champion of Justice," for her community activism. Uranga
has led efforts to balance the growth at the Port of Long Beach and the city’s airport with
the need to preserve the quality of life in our neighborhoods, protect the environment and
improve air quality throughout the region. Reyes Uranga served on the Long Beach City
Council, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the Board of Directors of
St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Nikole Cababa, as "Rising Star" in the movement for peace and justice. Nikole is a
2009 graduate of UCLA and is currently working as a community organizer for the Los
Angeles Alliance for a New Economy. She is a key leader in the Long Beach Coalition
for Good Jobs and a Healthy Community and serves on the education committee of
ANAKBAYAN, a youth and student organization working to address important issues
that affect Filipinos in the U.S. and the Philippines.

Youth Activism Award
The Out in the Silence Campaign is offering awards to students or youth groups who
effectively raise lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender visibility, call attention to the effects
of bullying and harassment, and promote fairness and equality through an Out in the
Silence event during National Coming Out Day, Ally Week and LGBT History Month,
October 2011.
A $1,500 Grand Prize will go to the gay-straight alliance, diversity club, or other
youth group that best reaches a wide cross-section of the school and surrounding
community through a creative and inspiring film screening and discussion.
A $750 Impact Award will recognize the group that best reaches a new audience and
recruits unexpected allies.
And, a $500 New Kid on the Block Award will recognize an event that fosters or
supports a new youth group.
The winners will be announced on International Human Rights Day, Dec. 10.
Register your group by Sept. 23 and obtain a free DVD of the Out in the Silence
film.
Hold the event during the month of October, preferably around National Coming Out
Day (Oct. 11) or Ally Week (Oct. 18-22). Make sure to take pictures or video.
Report back by Nov. 15.
Eligibility Requirements:
You must be a group (or coalition of groups) that serves LGBTQ youth aged 14 to
21. This could be a gay-straight alliance, diversity club, queer student group, or other
community, church, or non-governmental organization-based group.
There must be a responsible adult supervisor for the group; for example, the faculty
advisor for a high-school GSA, or the program director for an LGBT Center youth group.
There must be a fiscal entity that can receive the award as a charitable contribution, such
as a student activity fund or non-profit organization.
Judging Criteria: Public awareness, participation and impact.
