Greater Security Measures Unveiled for POLA
SAN PEDRO – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced, April 25, the implementation of increased security measures at the Port of Los Angeles.
During a tour of a the new Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center at POLA, Napolitano and Villaraigosa said the center will equip state and local police with the latest training tactics, procedures, knowledge and skills to maintain security at the port.
The Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center will teach the country’s first maritime curriculum to train state and local law enforcement. Course curriculum includes boat handling, chart reading and navigation rules in addition to maritime boardings, arrest procedures, vessel identification, searches and counter-terrorism practices.
Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano and Mayor Villaraigosa also announced the expansion of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) "If You See Something, Say Something™" campaign at the Port of Los Angeles.

Taste in San Pedro Moves to Waterfront
SAN PEDRO — The San Pedro Chamber of Commerce announced, April 21, that it will move the “Taste in San Pedro,” which takes place Aug. 5 to 7, to the Port of Los Angeles.
The event, which typically draws more than 10,000 people, will be centered on the Harbor Blvd. Parkway, between First Street and Sixth Street, in San Pedro.
The event will feature live entertainment, food and beverages from restaurants around the South Bay, park-and-ride convenience with shuttles and the Waterfront Red Car Line service, merchandise, a children’s activities area that includes a ferris wheel, and art displays.

Central SP Neighborhood Council Meeting
The Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council will host its monthly stakeholder meeting, at 6 p.m. May 10, at the Port of Los Angeles High School.
The agenda will be posed at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.

Gaffey Bridge Closed to Pedestrian
The Gaffey Street Bridge is closed to all pedestrian access for renovation of the bridge through July 1.
The public is asked to use alternate crosswalks on Santa Cruz and 1st streets.
The project will be done in three phases. The first phase will include sandblasting, painting and replacement of bridge fencing. It will also include repairs of the damaged structural poles and security lighting.
Previously, the bridge was retrofitted in 1996.
The second-phase of the renovations will include decorative blue lighting to reflect the nearby Vincent Thomas Bridge. Final design is being completed and the second phase will be completed in the next three to four months.
A third phase of work will include new landscaping around the bridge and median improvements.
On April 30 and May 7 there will be a full closure of the 110 South Gaffey Street exit from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to work on the bridge enhancements. Use alternate routes, such as the Harbor Boulevard or Channel Street freeway exits.
CalTrans will be placing signs on the 110 Freeway to alert motorists of the road closure.

Keep America Beautiful
Join other volunteer groups for the large-scale cleanup effort of the Dominguez Channel planned, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. April 30, near Victoria Park.
Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, takes place through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees.
Keep Carson Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Adopt a Stormdrain Foundation are participating and seeking volunteers for their activities.
There are several ways to participate. Select a site in Carson to clean, beautify or improve between now and May 31 and let them know if they can assist.
Parking is available at Victoria Park.
